WRONG ABS Module WORKS :D

UPDATE i drove the car with 'incorrect part number module' and IT WORKS, well the ABS works, only thing that does'nt work is the "tracs" button which has to be held pressed to turn off tracs..

So correct Module for my car is 9162675 but i have fitted module part 9140773, driven the car for 30minutes to the beach and back and nothing seems fried..car is 1998 V70 t5m

Part numbers.

Volvo has a habit of giving one part several different part numbers. I'll list them here.

All 96-98 FWD cars with TRACS. 850, V70, S70, C70. 9162675, 9140774 and 8602266. All of these are identical and compatible with each other.

All 96-98 FWD cars, non-tracs. 850, V70, S70, C70 9140773 and 8602265. All of these are identical and compatible with each other.

so it appears swapping 9162675 tracs unit with 9140773 non tracs, ABS works but no tracs

Only and ONLY if they are succeded.That means that old number is considered obsolete and new one replaced it.That is all well known in volvo parts catalogue or database and there is not a single chance of mistake.
You can't say that abs/tracs abs module is compatible with non tracs abs module,if tracs doesn't work with it.It doesn't work because it have NO tracs option.Therefore,it is NOT compatible.

You can install a different part number ecu to your car.It will run...but it will NOT run properly and will have check engine light ON.
The point that it would run with it with a fault doesn't mean that it's compatible with it.

On a 96-98 car the abs module isn't tied into engine management or the transmission. There's no communication between the two. On a 99-01 it is tied into the trans ecu and the only part of the ecu it works with is regarding the throttle on the stc units. The car is only looking for a compatible unit, it doesn't have any idea if it is supposed to have a TRACS unit or a non-traction unit.
