2006 S80: any issues

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2006 S80: any issues

Post by cn90 »

Hi guys,

I currently own 2 Volvos and very familiar with these 2 cars repair issues etc.:
- 1998 S70 GLT 2.5T with 185K miles
- 2005 XC90 AWD 2.5T with 105K miles

* I am looking at a 2006 S80 with 80K miles and wonder if the trans is the same as in the XC90, i.e., is it made by Aisin?
* Any transmission issues?
* Any issues with this particular year of 2006?

Didn't the P2-P3 changeover happen midyear '06? Or are the P3s strictly MY07+?
An Early MY06 might have the AW55-50/51SN tranny as opposed to the TF series Y/N?

As far as I can tell, sales started June 06 so it is possible to get a P2 MY06

In either case they're both considered solid trannys yes or no? The AWs are good so long as you're not subjecting them to constant daily abuse or put the wrong fluid in them.

My 06 S80 has the 2.5T with the AN55-50SN has been a very solid ride. Got it with 35k and now has 149k with only typical maintenance. ie. timing belt, control arms bushings and brakes.

As far as I seen and been told the MY06 solved many transmission issues by discontinuing the 4T65EGT. The M66 is highly sought after and I've read a few M66 swaps into cars with AWs. I'd say the MY06 S80s are pretty solid but, they are the first year P3 so take that into consideration.

If the S80 is a 6 cylinder 2006 MY then that year would have the GM transmission. 5 cylinder is as described above with the Aisin transmission.
2007 is the first year for the 2nd generation S80 that uses 6 speed Aisin gearbox and the new 3.2 non turbo 6 cylinder. Turbo 3.0 litre in the 2nd gen showed up the second year (2008).
