Catalytic Converter S70/850

Post by markntiff »

Knowing how much catalytic converters cost from a volvo dealer ($1,000+), just wanted to let anyone who is interested know about a good deal on one. I just bought a catalytic converter and the the exhaust pipes connected on both ends (from exhaust manifold to clamps) on ebay for $184 including shipping!! I copied the exact address below. Hope this helps some one. It sure helped me!

Be aware that the link shows a CAT for a non-turbo. CATs vary in price considerably...just make sure you get one that truly works.

I got a Magnaflow universal Cat off EBAY brand new for $55 and brought it to a muffler shop and the guy put it on for $40 making the total cost 95. Everything works perfect.

Save your old cat because people have been getting about $150 or so for them on EBAY for scrap cats off Volvo 850's.

Please let us know what the part looks when you get it. They say its OEM, which is doubtfull at the price they sell. I need to change mine and I am really looking for a reasonably priced part that will not change the car sound. Magnaflow works but there is a lot of ressonance after installing this.

Magnaflow is touted all over the different Volvo forum sites as working fine. A huge cost savings too!

There is hardly any noise from my Magnaflow cat. Yes you can hear some low tone humming but it is not as you have stated as "a lot". I also have had a Borla muffler put on and I thought the combination of the two would make alot of noise and I am surprised that they do not make much noise.

I will post again once I get the CAT and get it on my car to let you know whether it works or not.
Thanks "MadeInAmerica" for the info about saving my CAT for scrap. I'll definitely do that!

Like you said, there is a low tone humming with the Magnaflow, which is perhaps acceptable on a cost/benefit scale. I have a very sensitive hearing to low frequencies and it really bothers me. Also, outside of the car it is a whole lot louder than the original cat+ muffler combination.
My son likes it. I hate it. The good thing is that I can tell my son is arriving home when he turns the corner... Just one of those love/ hate dilemas...

Hi,

My car is 1998 S70 T5 Auto (1997 build and in-service date), and mileage is 315,000km (~200,000 miles). The cat is original. I use premium gas. The exhaust tube just downstream of the cat broke this summer when I hit a dip in the road at 140km/hr. The garage welded it back for $70.

I think cats should last if your previous usage of car did not run near E fuel level frequently and premium gas was used.

My 2cents.

Thanks.
