Well I had another post on finding an axle for a 5 speed auto transmission, and the issues with it arriving with a bad carrier bearing and a broken CV boot courtesy of UPS.

The bearings I ordered from abscates link in Turkey showed up in about 3 weeks from ordering from Turkey.

On my return from vacation, the dealer was quieter so the foreman told me to bring the axle down to see if they could pull the bearing for me. Good news was they were able to do it, but hit a snag with the new bearing. I had not opened the box and checked the bearing closely, but it turns out the outer race has a curvature and is not flat as per the original. So today I took a spare carrier bearing support down so we could see if that made a difference. Good news is that the carrier bearing support covers the outer sides of the bearing that is important to the sideways (length ways) motion of the axle (which should be minimal any way).

The dealer foreman had a young apprentice tackle the project of pulling the old bearing off. He carefully cleaned the old rust off the bearing area, and then using a puller fitted to the back of the outer race, pulled the bearing off fairly easily he said. That was the 'test' axle so now they will do the 'good' axle today and then I can fix the new bearing in place and keep the axle(s) for spares or sell them on. The guys at the dealer have been great on this as they now prove the carrier bearing can be removed from the later axles, and that we can find workable bearings a reasonable cost that work. Finally, they were great not to charge me as it gave the apprentice a challenge he would not normally see.

Above you can see the slight curvature on the outside of the bearing outer race. These bearings were spec'd for a Ford Fiesta or a Ford Transit.

In my never ending attempts to get a 'correct solution' wit a correct bearing, I have been told by various bearing suppliers that they can't supply the carrier bearing or automotive bearings.

Someone mentioned I think the Febest supplied a bearing of the correct size for this application. Looking on line, all the people that supplied it say that no stocks are available.

Interestingly, FCP gives 2 part numbers for the bearing, 9181693 and 3502019. Strange thing is when I check the 2nd part number it shows as a 45 x 65 x 19mm bearing, but the part I have is a 45 x 75 x19mm bearing.

Checking on Febest site in Europe it lists the 3502019 bearing as 45 x 75 x 19mm. Confused? I am!

Shipping 2 of these bearings to Canada would be about $100 CDN or $75 or so US which is a bargain relative to the OE part.

Also another strange thing is the local dealer quoted me a price lower than Tasca's price for the Volvo part in CDN$ than they sell it in US$!! I know they were giving me a deal, but seldom that good! In fact just confirmed they have one in stock at local dealer (9181693) so might just go check it is the same as I have and might just take it to fit onto my 'good' spare axle.

I will post back once I confirm we are talking the same part as used on 98 V/S70 and 850 is compatible at least with FWD 99-00 cars.

So ended up buying the bearing from Volvo for my 'good' spare axle and the less good axle will get the perfectly usable Turkish supplied bearing.

To confirm, Volvo part # 9181693 is the correct carrier bearing and is used on loads of newer Volvos also. It is 45 x 75 x 19mm as previously discussed. This is also the dimensions Fabest gives for their #3502019 (previous part number according to local dealer), so the one linked to Fabest previously should be good too.

I also confirmed the bearing came in at my discounted $150 CDN (about $120 US) from my local dealer which is 20% cheaper than Tasca who had the Lowest OE price I had found in the US.

I completely understand if money is that tight but a Rock Auto replacement axle assembly unit ($30-$50) will buy you back a full weekend of pain and suffering and likely last what is left of the life of your car.

I may get flamed for such heracy but I buy the cheapest one that has a heart next to it which means its a popular item and so far have not had a problem.

Sometimes its just worth it to pony up, slap in a rebuilt unit and go live life...

I feel you there. I bought a pair of CV axles from 1A auto for my 98 V70. They were very cheap and I didn't have a problem with them in the year I had them. Unfortunately car got wrecked so only know that they lasted fine for 1 year.

I have had aftermarket axles last as little a 5000km (or 6 months). The effort required to pull an axle on the LHS is not too bad, provided the axle retaining ring complies. The RHS is more work due to the carrier bearing.

Other issues I have had with aftermarket axles are CV boots splitting quickly, retaining rings that don't and retaining rings that won't fit, or release when axle need to be removed. So sure, using an aftermarket axle to get you through in an emergency or if you plan to sell a vehicle on soon I can understand. The other thing is if I am going to sell a car I wouldn't be a jerk and fix a potential bad part for the new owner to have an issue later. Each to their own.
