Alingment of cams

Post by Jwgould1 »

The cams moved however the crank did not move. Is there a way to just realign the cams? Or do I start akl over?

By move do you mean they moved a few teeth or moved as a rotation?

If they moved just a tad put the plastic timing cover on and line up the marks.

no they moved a lot. I need to start from scratch and just align everything so I am looking for step by step or a full video of how to do this.

There are a couple of videos on YouTube. It gets a little more complicated if you have the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) - some Volvos have it on the intake, some on the exhaust, and some on both. But it's still pretty straightforward. If you want to be really meticulous about it, you can buy the tool to lock the camshafts at the back end, and make sure they stay where they need to be. If you are just changing the timing belt, without further disassembly or parts replacement (i.e. not disassembling the VVT hubs,) then you can probably get by without the tool and just set the marks to the right place.

Hope this helps!

Did you separate the sprockets from the camshafts or did they simply rotate off of their timing marks? If the sprockets were never loosened from the shafts then getting it back in time is a piece of cake - no special tools required.

Also, what year is your car? The timing reference marks moved to 12:00 for both cam sprockets like somewhere around 2001???
