Fuel injector, broken "washer" on manifold end?

Post by prwood »

I am working on the PCV system replacement for my '01 V70 2.4t, and when I got to the step where I removed the fuel injectors from the intake manifold, a small piece on the manifold end of two of the injectors appears to have broken off.

In this photo from iPd, you can see the piece I'm talking about at the bottom of the photo, just below the O-ring. In this photo it appears to be a white plastic washer (I don't know if it's actually called a washer, but that's what I'm going to call it for now).

In my setup, looking at the other three intact injectors, as well as the pieces that broke off from the two, it appears they are reddish plastic washers (and apparently extremely flimsy).

The PCV system kit I got from iPd (https://www.ipdusa.com/products/11110/1 ... xc70-turbo) includes a set of five new O-rings for the manifold end of the injector, but does not include these washers. I don't know if that's because they don't expect them to break, or if the washer is readily available elsewhere, or if it's just not necessary.

Any thoughts on what I should do about this situation? Is this just a run of the mill nylon washer that I could pick up at a hardware store, or would I need to special order it, or, god forbid, does it only come as part of a new injector?

Thanks!

It is part of the pintle cap. You can find replacements. It is not uncommon for them to break.

adjust for your year as necssary

Hi

They are called "Pintle Caps", and they are meant to hold the upper / lower o-ring(s) in place. You asked... can you run your car without them? Sure, you can, but I myself wouldn't recommend that you do that because you can create a vacuum leak by pinching or cutting an o-ring when installing them or because there is nothing holding the o-ring in place it could get sucked into the intake-manifold, but that rarely will happen as long as you firmly push and seat each injector(s) o-ring before tightening down the (2) main fuel-rail bolts. As a side note... you can buy cheap Bosch -Type injector rebuilt kits of fleabay for around $10.00, that way you will always have extra's (Pintle Caps, O-Rings, filters) when and if you need to replace any injector part that maybe missing or broken!

I found that my local Advance Auto Parts sells a kit that contains the pintle cap. I'm going to pick up some of these, and may just go ahead and replace all of the pintle caps, as well as the O-rings, since I have it all taken apart anyway.

You will find it quite hard to remove a pintle cap... as mentioned, these break and drop at the bottom of the manifold quite often

I'll just do the ones that are broken then. :-)

So, the kit that I got from Advance doesn't seem to have the right type of pintle cap. It's a bluish plastic piece that actually looks like a hat. There's also a whitish washer which I thought would be the right part, but it's pretty loose when I put it on, and it doesn't have the tiny flange that the existing injectors have. Not sure if there's something else to do to get it to fit properly. Is this one of those heat-shrink type things? If so, I have a heat gun. I haven't yet reinserted the injectors into the manifold.

Search on ebay "Volvo 98-05 fuel injector kit", like $15 for 6 injectors.
