Glove box locked on '94 940

Hi Everyone,

I just bought a 940 turbo sedan for my daughter. This is my first Volvo experience. I actually developed a appreciation for the cars while shopping for them.

This car we bought has a glove box that won't open. The previous owners (ten years) said that they could not open it and may have something inside that they would want. Since I need to remove it anyway to repair the leaky vacum system, I need some advice on how to get it open without too much destruction.

The keys we have don't work. The knob turns a half turn but does not engage the latch. (I assume this is normal for being locked.) I tried to slip a .007 feeler gauge through to "slim Jim" the lock but couldn't make enough bends.

I gave up and started to disassemble the dash but unless I open the latch I can't get that section of dash apart the supports the bottom of the door!

Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Mark,

In no way am I a Volvo expert but I did read somewhere in the 850 forum something about the glove box to that model to have chronic problems.

Can't recall what it is I read, but when I was shopping for an 850 I did allot of reading there and noticed many people saying the same thing about the glove box and maybe in the meantime while waiting for that reply on yours, you could dig up some valuable information there that may help solve your problem.

Just a thought.

Hi eric,

Maybe if this is more of a problem than would be expected we can shed a little light on a fix.

I am going to try again to use the feeler gauge to slip the latch. I failed to find any diagrams of the mechanism on DIYalldata so I am flying blind when it comes to understanding the latch that I am trying to pick.
