To replace rod bearings they would have removed the sump. It wouldn't make any sense at all not to replace the o rings while in there. They are a $25 set.

Besides once the seal on the o rings is broken by removal of the sump there is no guarantee that they'll seal again unless they're replaced.

I think you need to have a chat with them as it seems this was a rushed reassembly.

If they agree to replace the o rings stress the importance of using anaerobic sealer on the sump such as Permatex 51813 or the Volvo genuine one as this ensures you protect the O2 sensor from silicon deposits that are in most sealers.

Does your car have and engine oil cooler? If you don't know, there should be 2 pipes that connect to the RHS (left when looking down standing in front of the car) of the radiator. If you do, they have a problem with their oil seals leaking with age and the retaining piece also bends allowing oil to leak. It may not be the oil pan. Clean the area off and if you do have cooler lines there is a thermostat housing just under the crank shaft pulley on the RHS and the 2 pipes to the cooler attach there. After 98, the oil cooler re-located from the radiator to the back of the oil pan.

Are we still chasing tappet noise on this car as you hadn't mentioned the noise was fixed that's why I mentioned o rings. A small oil leak won't cause tappet noise.
