I probably have the original pic but not on this computer. Here's what mine looks like, though:

5/8 chisel, from Sears.

You can go straight up from like 5 o'clock and/or 7 o'clock, then you won't hit the axle or seal area etc.. It doesn't really matter, unless the axle is really stuck it will pop right out without drama. If it is being stubborn, rotate it 90 degrees, try again, rotate again - you are trying to get the circlip to fall into place when you do that.

With the chisel I can move the axle just under a centimeter. But that is close to the maximum width of the chisel. I attached a chain to the protruding portion, rigged up something to serve as a fulcrum, and applied leverage. The protruding portion of the axle pulled free, but the boot is still stuck fast to the trans-axle.

It is not just the boot still attached, it is the inner race and male spline segment still in the transmission. (like a mirror to the part that goes through the hub) Diligence with the chisel, still the best way to pop that sucker free. Now you don't have the weight of the axle trying to cock the remaining parts, so it SHOULD :o come out easier.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

The last two posts on page 2 here show some "interesting" ways to remove an axle:

I just did this job and had to use a pry bar and chisel on opposite sides, was VERY
worried that the case was going to crack. I have a leak now from that side.

I tried putting some heavy-duty 3-ft tie wraps around and behind it, wrapped them together and pulled on them with leverage. Invariable the tie-wraps broke. It is now extracted ab out 1 cm and seems to be frozen at that point. Visual inspection shows some gouging on the outside of the case from the chisel, but I don't think that will be an issue. I have reached the maximum thickness of the chisel, however, so am seeking some other methods.

Any sort of pneumatic "jaws of life" type device I can wedge in between them? I've run out of resources available in my garage.

I have never had one that difficult to remove. I am worried that the spring retainer has somehow gotten wedged between the axle and the trans hole and you are actually trying to drag it all through. If that is the case you could damage the transmission too.

I would be tempted to knock it back into the trans and see if it loosens up and then try again. The issue then is if a piece of the spring ring breaks off it is in the trans......!

Use a 5/8 chisel (or a tapered, wooden wedge, etc.), tap it straight up from underneath with a heavy hammer. "Pop," it's out.
I too have doing it like this for years. It should work without having to do anything else(if done correctly)
