I just started having problems with my XC70. I was in traffic in Tucson and I noticed that my car was overheating. I pulled out of traffic and stopped the car. The coolant level was low and I waited for the engine to cool down before opening up the reservoir to top it off. It was very low and will have to figure out where it went to later. Now I need to figure out why my fan is not coming on. From everything I have read so far, My year does not have a fan relay. It is a module control mounted on the fan. With just a two wire connector for power and one purple wire for control from the ECM. I have tried turning on the A/C to get the fan to come on, but the fan does not come on.
How can I test to see if it is a power part of the fan or the control(ECM) part that is not working as designed? I just don't want to go out and buy a new fan if it is an ECM issue. The system is not throwing codes. When I plug in my reader, it will read the engine temperature, but if it times out during troubleshooting when the reader comes back on the engine temperature does not read. I can not trust my dash gauge because they have been intermittent for some time now and that too is an issue that I am working on.
Any test procedures or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

that module goes bad. I replaced my module with one bought used, just cut and reweld the wire . the coolant temp sensor (along with the thermostat) also can go bad
