98 S70 N/A: Question about coolant and expansion tanks

I apologize for not reading all of the post but that really looks like oil. I would thing that either the engine is somehow leaking oil into the coolant system, or it's transmission fluid getting in through the rad. The thing about that is, if it's manual, there is NO connection to the transmission. If it's NA there is no oil through the radiator.

Send an oil sample to Blackstone labs. They will at least be able to tell you if there is coolant in the oil.

I meant to send one off but by the time I remembered, all the oil was out already... This is where my engine was 10K ago.

Well, if you are loosing coolant fast, you can send a sample in as soon as you loose a bottle.

Always use Volvo coolant! There is a reason they have their own. If they were trying to just make money they would market their own auto trans fluid, brake fluid which they don't. It is a European formulation for European cars. Same goes for Japanese cars.
The all in one coolants are for cheap asses. Best saying: "don't be penny wise but pound foolish."

I know, I know... To be honest, based on June's recommendation, I'd change my coolant if I didn't have to wait until Spring to recycle it. (In NYC, you can only recycle coolant 4 days a year. And just try to get a mechanic to accept your old coolant!)

Without having this thread de-evolve into another coolant thread, I thought the coolants to use, in order of goodness, were the following:
1. Volvo
2. Pentosin
3. Zerex G05
5. Anything Green with a label
6. No-name green...
7. Distilled water
8. Water

Am I wrong here?

Marco..drop coolant off up here, we can discharge into drains up here. No for that in NYC, of course.

I had a coolant tank that looked like that earlier this year. My radiator was shot. I was getting coolant into the ATF and something, ATF or oil, into my coolant. Replaced the rad with the Nissens and all seemed well until I noticed a slow leak. I just replaced the expansion tank with OE volvo, the old one had some cracks on the bottom nozzle. Come to find out I busted the sensor somehow. Just replaced the sensor with a URO in 5 minutes by the lift expansion tank and power steering box and replace method shown by abscate (showed my 5 year old too).

During that, I think the bottom coolant hose (P/N 9445378) had some cracking/weeping. It must have been the original spot of the coolant loss.

Can I get away with a URO hose for this or stick with OEM? Any thoughts on how to get enough coolant out to replace without draining all? I always use volvo coolant, and just replaced it 2x this year and I'd rather not drain the whole thing to replace this hose.

If I could get to both ends easily and I can inspect the hose totally, and were short on bread, I would use a URO here. It is still under pressure, but you are going to see any leak quickly from within car.

To replace - lift reservoir carefully and only enough to find the level sensor disconnect, remove it.

Now you can tip the reservoir enough to have the bottom nipple dry so you can replace the hose without draining coolant

Yes but I would only item 1 and 2. Zerex is not a direct copy of Pentosin. Price delta is probably a fancy coffee.

Just don't do that on my side of the river on a rainy day - as it will end up in the river after the plant has to go into bypass after exceeding capacity. =p

Makes for an interesting swim in the Hudson as well...
