Re: Cleaning DIY: 850 IAC (Idle Air control valve) cleaning

Post by cn90 »

I understand this is an old (but very good) post.

I have a very specific question: does this Idle Valve ever goes bad that needs replacement?

I have been cleaning my Idle Valve every 50K, and have zero issues, but the other day I was at the junk yard and saw a newish looking Idle Valve, I am tempted to salvage it for later use, but if the forum tells me this part virtually never goes bad, then I'd not bother removing it from the junk yard car.

Great write up - thanks for the info!

cn90 - I would guess that the only time this valve would be bad/need replacement is if you are getting a code relating to the IAC valve. No idea if that's common or not; sorry.

Wish there was a photo of the "rubber elbow on the passenger side end of the intake manifold"

Nothing showing there on my 1993. Did you take anything off to get that photo?

There is no nipple on the intake manifold on the 93's or 94's (all?). On my 94 the vacuum line from the air intake hose was connected to the vacuum tree.

Hi there

I have spent a bit of time researching about the IAC valve and watched a few youtube videos and looked up parts on amazon etc...everything was rosy until I opened the cover...to my confusion, I couldn't find the IAC valve or anything that looked like it? Shouldn't it be a shiny round bottle like structure with 2 big tubes connected to it. I looked again and found a small round bottle like black structure with 2 small tubes connected to it. Nothing like 50+ or so pictures that I see on the internet.

I have a 1996, 850 GLE 5 cyclinder 10 valve 4 dr base model.
My Idle air control valve looks like this below:

My question is that is my IAC valve cleanable? If not, where can I buy one? Dealership says Volvo don't make them anymore and I searched around a bit and couldn't really find one either.

Thanks a great bunch!

It's the same I have problems with on my car. I haven't yet fixed mine, but my trusted Volvo mech told me to disconnect the two hoses from the IAC and the wiring, remove the IAC from the car, pour rubbing alcohol into both ends and block them off while you give it a vigorous shake. Empty the IAC and repeat 5-6 times. Do not use compressed air or something harsher than rubbing alcohol as the valve in it is supposedly quite fragile.

That's an interesting point. I've always cleaned them out with carb cleaner but maybe it's better to use something milder, e.g. rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol.
