Has anyone ever had a tensioner failure?

I am planning on changing the water pump and timing belt on the '96 next week and the price of the tensioner in particular and the idlers to a lesser extent is a killer. I am going to change the water pump for sure as I did have a pump fail on a (thank God) full clearance Chrysler and it took the timing belt out with it.

Have any of you ever had the tensioner fail? If it is strong while being compressed and not leaking I can't imagine that it could be bad.

From what I've heard, most T-belt failures are the tensioners NOT the belt itself.
They don't cost all THAT much

I hope the link works. Anyway bottom line is that someone's tensioner broke, repair cost was $4000

I say bite the bullet and get the tensioner also.

Tensioner for every other T-Belt change. Also, same for water pump.
