Are there differences in SC-816 head units?

I pulled an amp and radio on my last PnP visit and have just got around to checking them in the project V70. Apart from the wrong code (radio must have been swapped at some stage) the radio and amp work.

The current (original) SC-816 unit in the car has a sound that feels a bit 'light'. The rescued SC-816 says 'Premium Sound' or something like that, and it seems to give a fuller sound with the bass/treble set to the same points. The original does not say the 'Premium Sound'. Also the original unit is grey and the rescued one is black.

Easy answer - Now that you’ve got an amp, drop a 901 in there!

I would but I don't plan to keep this project V70. The SC-816 is fine, and attached to an amp it is actually really good. But again, I am not putting an amp in either. They are getting too hard to find.

Still the question is even though the 2 units have the same ID, the one with the premium sound on it does sound the better of the 2 head units.
