If you take out the piston you probably want to take the connecting rod, too.

That will leave the crankshaft badly out balanced

A well parted car with a good used engine will give you 100k miles, at 2-3 cents per mile...great cost of running!

The 1200 buck replacement car will need 2k of work just fixing deferred maintenance

LOL, why waste your time trying to disable a disabled cylinder.

What is a low mileage engine? Something less than 300,000? Mine has 370,000 and is going strong.

You can swap the engine in 15 hours. A wrecked car with an NA engine will cost less than $400. Then you can part out stuff so you'd get a free engine.

I think op has covered this. I'm sad I'm not closer as I would gladly do this swap as a learning experience to get this one on the road. My two weekend clutch job taught me these jobs broken up tight are much easier than a marathon day.

We've all done things in life that make sense to ourselves but that others wouldn't do or understand. That said, there is something to be said about learning things first-hand.

It's his car -- if he wants to use it as a swimming pool - I'll give suggestions on pool liners =)

If he wants to use it as an aquarium, I'll suggest species of fish... As long as it isn't hurting me, I'll attempt to assist as best I can with his endeavour.

While I may not personally choose to go his route - it isn't my car, it isn't my finances, and most importantly it isn't my decision.

When the Atom bomb was first created there was concern that it might end the world in the first blast. We're still here - for the moment... But what if they never tried?

- Yes, it will run on 4 cylinders. For the last 6 months, my #3 exhaust valves are burned, I have been running on 4 cylinders (electrical connector to #3 disconnected). It is a "grocery getter" car...It vibrates at idle but at highway speed, it is barely noticeable.

- Even if you manage to remove the piston rod in situ, you still need a new oil pan, about $100 on ebay, junkyard is cheaper.

- Interestingly, there is a used engine about 150 miles from me, exactly like my car engine, with about 140K miles for sales for $150.
I just don't have the time/effort to swap engine (unless rspi is here LOL). Engine swap is anywhere between 8-12h labor charge. Then you have to replace the RMS when the engine is out, not to mention trans seal. So if you are patient enough, you should be able to find a used engine locally. But an engine at this age probably has leaky valve seals, a recipe for future exhaust valves issues.

- If you are a Volvo enthusiast (you probably are LOL)...then get a used engine and rebuild the whole thing while it is out of the car: new valve seals (can be done without removing the cyl head), new RMS etc.

- I am still curious what happened to your engine, never seen a broken con rod punching through the oil housing like this...

The nice thing about the engine swap is that: you have an old engine that you can send to a pathologist for an autopsy LOL...

After reading Neil's travails with his beautiful R an engine won't stop me. It's getting10 hours into a rear axle and gig hating out a 2 kg hunk of Al mount is NLA - that would be my " awakening from cold sweat nightmare"

YES. YES YES! I didn't ask for advice on what to do. I asked if the car would run with a cylinder disabled. "Thoughts?" in my original post means thoughts relevant to the question about running with 4 cylinders.

Everyone has a different situation. I live in the suburbs in a neighborhood with COVENANTS. I am not allowed to have ANY car in the driveway (this rule is not enforced unless the car isn't being used), much less a disabled car AND a wreck to pull parts from. I ALREADY know that the best solution to my problems is an engine swap. In addition to the neighborhood covenants reason I am not motivated enough to do the swap. I seriously have no interest in doing that. I considered it initially and decided against it. I could go out and buy a brand new V70 if I wanted to. I'd do that before doing a swap. I also have a medical problem that makes working on the car difficult and very painful for me. An engine swap would have me in extreme neck pain for a month - pain killers, etc don't help much. So an engine swap is OUT OF THE QUESTION.

Actually, I'm not. I only bought the car because it was cheap. I am a frugal person. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the money back out of it that I've spent on parts.

I either want to get my money out or do something good with the car. The daughter of the people who sold it to me (friends) goes to high school this year and the school is only 1,5 miles away. I figured I could get it running on 4 cylinders for her to drive to school if they wanted it. Since they sold it to me for so little I would just give it to them. The high school band is excellent and they often have Saturday band practice at 7:00 AM. That's why I bought it 10 years ago - so I would not have to get up and drive my daughter to band practice at 6:30 on Saturday.

This is volvo enthousiast forum and we all love our cars and all Volvos....actually... we adore them.
