1998-2000 V70 Tailgate Latch Autopsy - Part number 8628197

Post by abscate »

Start notes.

1 This part 8628197 is for a two stage locking tailgate latch found on late 1998 and bastard P80s

2 The part number 9203955 is used on non-two stage locks - no more information known on that here.

3 This is an impressive Rube Goldberg device which I am sure has some Swedish Engineer in the nut house, giggling at the padded walls

It performs many functions

1. Interior tailgate release for heated rear seat

2.Child proof lock for (1)

3. Pull knob for trunk in tailgate trim

4 12V solenoid lock/unlock for use with cabin button and remote fob

5 Key lock and release for the cool V70s that still have a keyhole in the tailgate - this key allows you to lock, unlock and open the tailgate

6 Tailgate handle release above license plate

7 Tailgate shrimp gumbo, dice it, slice it, filet it, BBQ it..

What a fascinating post...but I fear I may need a translation? Did you figure out how to get rid of another cause of the 'tailgate open' light issue?

I have had my V70 rear pillar exposed for a year now trying to get the 'tailgate open' light off and the rear demister to operate. I am annoyed that butt splicing every wire has not fixed either.

I am more than willing to rip apart the tailgate latch mechanism to check 1 off the list. the double photos are a bit confusing, the tailgate panel has to be removed to get that part out?

I'm pretty sure the light is operated by a 12 V loop going through that micro switch, so you could check the connector above it but if the light is on the tailgate latch plastic is probably Broken, it's hard to imagine the wires breaking and putting 12V just in the right place

Replaced the latch with a new one from FCP. It's expensive, $160, as you have to buy the entire metal bracket, lock solenoid, and complete lock assembly in ABS.

You have to remove the tailgate interior cover (lock handle trim screws, trim, remove handle two m6 bolts) then pop not yon of cover down, remove cover)

You have four lock rods to attach

Easiest one is the interior tailgate lever..it just plunges down into the right most hole, no attachment

The lock plunger hooks into the white plastic hook on right part of lock solenoid

The key and outside handle both slip, into pin holes and then are retained by plastic keepers as shown..in the pic below the keeper is not yet clipped into the rod, it rotates 90 degrees to secure the rod

If the wire control rod doesn't reach, you are putting it in the wrong place!

You have to put the interior latch lever on last, as the lock today plunges down into the hole, then you secure the handle with two M6 bolts. If you don't pay attention , the lock rod can slip out of place if you let the handle move more than a cm or so.

I have a nice new crisp tailgate lick now, and I got back my rear light and alarm system operation too, and now have no lights on the dash!

Two failures.

Black plastic micro switch part broke off latch

Spring holder to return lock latch also broke, so spring was loose in metal latch

I can't see a way to open the metal latch up and effect repairs, it is welded closed. My PnP one lasted about two years but never really worked as well as the new one. I do think these things just wear out

PSST... I have a 3D printer and can print plastic parts in either ABS, PLA or other polymers in varied success.

You'd be surprised what people can do with 20 minutes and tinkercad of all things... In winter folks may find various ABS/PLA pieces on the bike that aren't there in the summer. Thus far mice don't like to eat the stuff...

Very nice. The plastic part that breaks on this part is buried inside the metal latch which I could not figure out how t open. It has swaged metal pins holding it together.

Do you want to put pins in the driveway this morning? 😀

Yuck.

If you feel like it, go for it. I will not be. Fat man tetris this morning took the life out of me...
