1998 V70XC Propeller Shaft Recommendations needed...

Post by shiloh51933 »

This is my third V70XC, first was a '98 that died due to hydro locking motor (water level sensor failure to illuminate ), second '00on V70XCSE destroyed by deer on Sunrise hwy LINY & third is another '98 V70XC. They were all blue in color with tan leather interior. This '98 was a good find with literally 100,104 miles on the odometer with tons of service reciepts, original purchase paper work from PDI Dealership. Anyway it's in solid shape for its year but of course the propshaft center carrier bearing is worn being 19 years old and the propshaft is moving around turns causing it to bang into other parts. The CV joints should probably be replaced on both ends as well. My thought is just buy a remanufactured propeller shaft to save myself the trouble since I'll probably never have time to rebuild and install. Plus I can't have the vehicle down for more than a day or two. I'm looking for recommendations on remanufactured propeller shafts for the 1998 V70XC, what, who, when & where you purchased the propshaft from. Please leave as much details as possible and your experience with it up to now. Thank you in advance and I look foward to reading your post.

They aren't necessarily cheap but I haven't heard of any complaints from the service from Colorado Drive Shaft. I bought a junk yard core and was getting ready to send it to them when my first XC got wrecked. Just dumb luck that I hadn't already sent it off.

I’ve got about 6K on a Colarado Driveshaft prop shaft installed a couple months back with no issues. Like Lee said they were great to deal with, strongly recommend.

It replaced a salvage yard shaft installed by the previous owner that only lasted about 20K. To be fair I had some tire pressure issues leading up to the failure that may have caused the salvage yard part t fail early.

Edit: I’d make plans to at least get the failing part out pretty soon if you drive the vehicle regularly. They run fine as FWD. I’m used to stuff breaking and having a month at least to find the time to fix it with these cars.

By the time I realized the sounds I was hearing were from my propshaft it went from “gee I need to get that fixed” to “I’m scared to drive the car” in like 1,000 miles.

Having the driveshaft re-built is the way to go if you want to keep the AWD. I have used Colorado Drive-shaft and they were very good and efficient. At least you don't have the cross-border costs both ways as well!

You could try the guys at Erie Vo-Vo in the NYC area to see if they have a good one. They are good to deal with and have a lifetime warranty on used parts they sell.

Thanks for your replies, I'm definitely keeping the AWD. Why buy an XC if your not going to have AWD.

Thank you for your reply, do you mind sharing how much you paid for the propeller shaft from Colorado Driveshaft?
Yeah, I had to remove the propshaft from my 2000 V70XC/SE because the Angle Gear companion flange seal would leak when the propshaft was moving off balance. The 2000 V70XC/SE had a failing center support carrier bearing bushing...this cause the shaft to move or lets say wobble around sharp turn s at first. Eventually this failure caused a bearing to fail inside of the Bevel Gear, the bearing closest to the companion flange. I removed the propshaft to rebuild and still have use of the vehicle but a couple months later a bunch of deer ran in front of my 2000 V70XC/SE on a hwy while traveling 75mph @ 2:30 AM, needless to say I didn't see them until it was too late and luckily my Cross Country saved my life but her front end was pretty bad. I'm thinking just get the reman and swap it in.

500 and they give you 100 back when they get your core back, make sure you save the return shipping label that comes in the box with the prop shaft. It provides free shipping when you return the core.

I lost mine but they emailed me another one when I called. Solid company.

$400.00 is worth saving the trouble of replacing the CV joints, U-joint and carrier bearing that would cost a couple hundred bucks anyway. Thank you again.
