i bought a 2001 v70xc last year with a few mechanical issues... or so ii thought. appeared to have a leak in the power steering and the PCV system needed some love. fixed both of these and the car seemed to run fine. although i remember the previous owner said something about a hard start. never really had an issues until i really started to drive it.. about six weeks into owning it occasionally it would take 2 or 3 tries to start or sometimes iit wouldnt start until i was craning it over for 5 plus seconds. but mostly it would start within 2 seconds of the starter being engaged. with a few times it just wouldnt start no matter what, cranking so much as to drain the battery. ive tried using a different battery, tried to use the jump start function on my battery charger and get no results.
so at the moment it wont start for the life of me. when attempting to start it if i hold the key down for say 15 seconds about 7 seconds in the starter disengages and all the dash lights turn off and the clock resets to 1200. all as if someone has disconnected the battery and reconnects it as i attempt to crank it over. also the tach will bounce all the way up to around 4500 rpm. brand new crank and camshaft pos sensor.
there is a white smoke from the exhaust that just reeks of unburned fuel. on a side note the car seemed to run slightly rich, although i never had a chance to confirm this or look into it.
ive replaced the starter relay, had the starter checked to see if it was good. replaced and upgraded the size of the battery cables. i cant find my mouse to the laptop that has vida on it, but last time i did hook it up to the car i remember i would get a couple odd pending codes, either signal missing code from all cylinders and another time i had one that said the turbo was operating at 120% power @like 550 rpm. impossible!
ive tried to eliminate if the ignition switch was bad by trying to jump the starter, feed 12v to the green red wire. no luck. any ideas? ive checked more things on this car than i probably should have ever done. i would love to get it running.
crank, no start.

Cranking too long will burn the starter. It will also throw fuel inside the catalytic converter and damage it.
A few had issues with firing up the engine, I remember someone had a defective crank sensor, another one had a problem with the crank pulley (viewtopic.php?f=9&t=58219)
Also worth inspecting the timing belt if it's the original one
Your 2001 also had problems with throttle body, not sure if it would affect the engine start

not too worried about burning the starter up. napa reman=lifetime warranty. although not too fun to take out. its got a brand new crank and camshaft sensor. crank pulley seems like a longshot, but then again who knows whats happened to this car. most of what was in that quoted link has to do with the car being torn apart if im not mistaken. ill sell it before i get too involved with something like that.oragex wrote: ↑04 Feb 2018, 11:19 Cranking too long will burn the starter. i do knowby looking at it the timing belt was replaced. looks like some time ago. when attempting to start it and the power "cuts out" i noticed that the cam pulleys will turn in reverse a 1/4 in or so, pretty sure its normal. as far as timing what should this thing be at idle? i remember looking at it on vida a while ago and at idle it seemed to jump around a long, something like between 13* and 16* btc. seemed odd.
as for the throttle body i know its been replaced at some post. i thiink this one was mad in 05 or 06? but the car hasnt had the software update. far from a licensed Volvo dealer.
any ideas as to why i cant log into Vida anymore? i open it and type in the log in info and it acts like its loading them loops back to the main login screen never logs in. ive never had such a nightmare of a car!!!!

You’ve got severe wiring or battery cable, issues
Every time you lose voltage the ECU is resetting too, which isn’t good for starting either.
Could also be a bad ignition switch or battery

upgraded the size of the battery cables.
On the positive side, there are two cables between the positive battery terminal and the starter, did you do both of them?
Every circuit has two sides, positive and negative, did you check the entire ground pathway and all connections between the starter and the negative battery terminal?

i used two different batteries, both which are good batteries with the same results. dont think its a battery issue. i replaced the long cable from the battery to the fuse box, the fuse box to the starter, and also the wire from the starter to the alternator. beefed up the negative cable also, installed a second cable from the battery. all with 1/0 awg wire. big as shit. alternator wire was 2 ga. nothing else is powered off the cable going to the starter is there? i didnt cut it out of the wire looms, just ran new ones in the general same path. checked visually all the grounds that i could see when i had the carpet pulled up. is there a large ground from the engine to the chassis i seem to be over looking? didnt notice one besides the small one on the back pass side of the engine.
anyways, got the patch for vida and hooked it up. got some weird codes, again. a lot are im guessing due to taking the seat out. pics!

Electronics controlled cars can get picky about the voltages.
