What is a good material to cut my own trunk mat?

I keep putting off getting a trunk mat but I really should, I throw a lot of random stuff back there.

My last Wagon I had a weathertech mat and wasn’t impressed.

I use a tarp sometimes but it’s flimsy, anywhere I could get a sheet of some thicker rubber/plastic material for cheap?

What was wrong with the weather tech?

Lowes sells rubber floor mat by the yard - that should do the trick for about 0.50 cents per SQFT

Oil-Dri Garage Guard Oil Absorbent Rugs.

Looks like carpet, absorbent on one side, impenetrable on the other side, cheap enough to to be sacrificial. On top of that, the gray color is close enough most people don't notice it ... if your trunk is gray.

Ya that would be perfect, gonna go take a look. With my weather tech mat the material was too thin to handle the way they designed it with the 2-3” raised edge all around. The edges just start to curl and take away from the custom fitted look you’re paying a hundred plus for.

If you’re gonna do raised edges I think it’s gotta be harder thicker plastic like some of the late model Volvo trunk mats out there.

In fairness I used it a lot and had it in and out of the car (my kids are still small enough that they think riding in a rear facing third row is a special treat).

At this point I just want something that fits well and I can beat up and then replace every so often at a reasonable price.

I saw a wagon with a Volvo silicon rubber cargo mat once. Looked really good. Don't want to think how much that cost, but seemed really durable. For something cheap and protective that will soak up spills, I just use cardboard.

I just grab some of the factory ones from picknpull- the sedan ones will fit a wagon just have a couple of bare areas up at the front corners

The Sedan mats are still available new I think. From the diagrams it looked like they’d fit like that but it’s good to know that’s the case.

Seems weird they discontinued the factory trunk mats for wagons. Much larger market than most of the parts still in production, why not make that money?

I have used a discarded Persian style rug after cleaning it at the car wash, industrial carpet, and currently am using a custom fit cardboard with a uhaul furniture blanket, cut and taped underneath. I'm into low weight and sound absorption, no cost repurposing. or go spend your kids tuition at the dealership.

Stall mats for horses - can be sourced at tractor supply. ~$40-$60 and the mat will last the life of the car. You may want to air it out a couple weeks before cutting and installing...
