Fuel system is priming just for 2-3 seconds when key is in pos.II....after that the relay cuts off.
That said....when key is in pos.II,fuel pump runs ONLY for 3 seconds...after 3 seconds...you can wait as much as you want and that wouldn't/shouldn't make the difference in fuel pressure.
I guess that there are some electrical gremlins in the system.
I tested it repeatedly just to be sure, waiting only 3 seconds is not enough for my car to start normally. Even 5 or 6 seconds is hit or miss, but 8 is always enough for it to start right up. I also tested the fuel pressure, I was getting 56 psi while running and 50 psi as soon as I shut it off. It was slowly dropping after that (47-48 psi after a few minutes), which seemed similar but I wasn't able to wait 20 minutes to see how closely it matched abscate's data (Valentine's day plans...). So it does sound like I might have a restriction or something somewhere causing the fuel to take a while to fully pressurize, but I'm not sure where. The car shows no issues at all while it's running, and the new fuel filter I installed was a Mahle brand, which FCPEuro says is OEM.

Next time I get a dry day I'll see how quickly the pressure builds when the key is turned on, just for curiosity's sake. If I get full pressure after 3 seconds, then I'll start looking at electrical stuff again.

When starting my FWD 00 V70 base, I can turn the key and it will almost immediately start up. With my 00 V70R AWD (different fuel system) I turn the key to position II, let the pump prime for a few seconds and then it starts straight up. If I don't wait those few seconds, the car will take several cranks to fire up. The AWD has had nearly everything replaced in the fuel system, including all the lines and much of the evap system and the fuel pump and ejector pump. All parts were OE and it is still the same. Fuel pressure is still in the high 50's psi so I have learned to accept this as a 'quirk' and live with it.

Yeah, mine changed from starting up immediately to having this issue back in maybe October. Seems like I can just live with it, but it's bugging me that something changed and I can't figure out what. And I'm always worried that whatever the problem is could get worse and cause a real issue without a simple workaround.

Fair comment. If things change then there is that nagging doubt. If it just is that way like mine has been for the last 5+ years, I just learned to accept it especially as it was the least of the issues over the time.

I just have to mention that you could have a LARGE vacuum leak on the line that connects to the intake manifold near the middle then goes to the drivers side into a T fitting. The size of the line is different at each end because there is an adapter in the middle of the line. Small line at the nipple and larger line at the T fitting. My hose was split 80% of its length past the adapter going towards the T. This could create a very lean condition at the cold start of an engine.
