2004 transmission issue

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

2004 transmission issue

Post by aahmes57 »

2004 S80 It seems that the trans only works in 1st 2nd and reverse. It doesn’t move in 3rd and drive. Do I need a new transmission?
Is there anything that I can do to deternime which way to go with this car. 180,000k miles
Thanks John

There was also a recent timing belt installed. Could they be related?

How was the car performing before the timing belt install? Do you have any engine codes now?

You could have a bad transmission, solenoid issue, or maybe a position switch. Please provide as much background information as possible regarding how the transmission was working before the timing belt change, after the change for how long.

Also - which engine and transmission do you have?

The transmission could be failing mechanically without any error codes. You likely have the AW5550 Transmission made by Warner Asia I think and you likely will not be able to get a rebuilt of it (such as buying a transmission of that type that is rebuilt in Mexico for example) . Pull the yellow dipstick and smell the oil. If it is a burnt smell , that is not such good news

I cannot imagine that a timing belt change would have anything to do with the transmission although a low , rough idle will tend to underpower the unit when at idle . Check for delayed engagement when taking off from a stop position. Any problems downshifting when coming to a stop ?
