Problem after putting starter in 01 s60

Post by chelseabrentjr »

Hello everyone,

I'm new here as you can see. I recently bought my first Volvo about a month ago. Got to drive it for a couple weeks and the starter went out. So I replaced the starter and everything, only now it is acting really bad whereas it drove fine before the starter went. It is a 2001 s60 t5. It seems like after it sits for a while it will start up and run normal. Then soon after the idling starts bouncing around 1000 rpms. I got it out on the road but it was not fun or easy. And when driving it is like as soon as you let off the gas to shift almost feels like it down shifts itself..... I don't know if that makes sense. It also was back firing in 1st and 2nd. Any ideas of what this could be? I really need my car back driving and I've been searching for days will no help. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

After doing some more research and asking I was told it sounds like the charge tube is not on right. Is there anyway to put it on while being able to see what you are doing?

If the induction tubing is loose on these cars all Hades breaks loose. The engine is trying to meter fuel based on air flow so leaks in the air tubing after the air cleaner will really mess that up.

Five years ago, this very issue led me to MVS!

Also I read that there is a gasket or o ring on the tube down underneath?? I didnt remember seeing one when i pulled it off. Hmmm. But then again i really could not see much at all under there. Where does this o ring/gasket go exactly?

ok i found the other forum i seen the info in. it says the o ring is on the OTE tube on the turbo side. i didn't do anything with that tube/pipe. so i'm guessing there is not any kind of o ring/gasket at the end of the other charge tube underneath the throttle body? are the both called charge tubes/pipes? it's quite confusing trying to find any videos or walkthroughs on it.

Look on the Volvo Parts Lisle Site for a blowup of the charge air pipe layout and all will be clear

So I got her up and running last night. Turned out it was exactly what the guy who sold me the car said it was. The CAC pipe was not on right. It was quite fun trying to tighten that hose clamp basically one handed, but I got it!!! Just by I guess not having it tight and on all the way the correct way, it made the car backfire like crazy and it would like bogg down every time I let off the gas or went to shift. It was also pretty difficult to even keep it running. But, like I said just putting that charge tube on fixed it right up.

Well I spoke too soon!!! It was running fine, but started doing the same thing again. So, I let the engine cool while at work and went out at lunchtime and put the charge tube back on better so I thought. When I tighten that hose clamp down there, right under the throttle body it seems to get tight then snaps and gets loose and, then kinda tight, and snap loose again. Does anybody know? Is that only supposed to be kinda snug or I'm thinking more like it needs to be tight as a mofo!! Since it seems to keep coming off. Unless, of course I never have been putting it on right to begin with. I couldn't find any videos or really any guides on installing it except for aftermarket ones. But then again I'm sure it would be a fun time getting a camera and light down there. I can't see anything that is going on. I just use my hands, which barely fit. Any information or details would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the clamp has stripped. Perhaps you (like I would do) h ave over-tightened it to ensure it is on there good?
