Brand new to the forum and to Volvos... bought a 2007 V50 with a 2.5 T5 and 6-speed manual gearbox at an auction today. Beautiful black w/ black interior, and 160k miles. Trouble is that it was bought sight-unseen and was greeted to an engine tick/knock, bluish smoke in the exhaust, and a check-engine light when we picked it up.
Some research reveals that I confirmed the engine to be a B2524T, evidenced by the VIN 6th and 7th digits being "68", and the stamp on the head and the decal on the hood/bonnet. According to a couple sites (this one for example), that engine is used in many Volvo models. But it seems there's variants of the B5254T... notably a B5254T2, B5254T3, B5254T4 and B5254T7 with wildly different power and torque specs. Neither the stamp on the head or the decal reflects which of these variants are installed. To add to the confusion, it seems that this engine in one variant or another was installed in the Ford Focus?
So, here's my question; should I... 1( pull what's there and try to rebuild/machine to repair, 2) source a direct replacement from a 2005-2007 V50 or S40, or 3) can I source any of the -3, -4 or -7 variants from other models for replacement? That S60R B5254T4 variant puts out 300HP?!?
Thanks a bunch for the replies, and looking forward to more forum posts!
V/r,
John
