How to remove a single wire from connector?

Post by Klook »

Folks-
I'm chasing down some things on my '81 245 with K Jet. I have downloaded a copy of the Green book and have gone through the system, now I'm trying to dial in the idle.
It says I should disconnect a certain wire from the plastic multi connector for the ECU which is in the passenger side comp.
Finding this is no issue, in fact I had the connectors unplugged to test various parts of the system as the book laid out. My issue is, once I find the wire, how do I get it out? The book says nothing of this, simply "remove wire 12". Basically you remove the wire, reconnect the connector, set the idle with throttle stop screw, then reconnect the wire and the idle should jump up in RPM.
This is a basic plastic multi connector, it has 8 wires going in, then it gets plugged in to the ECU.
How the heck to do I get the wire out? I don't want to break the plastic connector or wire trying to force it.
thanks,
Klook

The name of the tool your asking about is Pin Extractor.

Examples.

A Pin Extractor compresses the retaining tabs so that one can back out the pin.

On some but, not all, it is possible to use Jewelers screwdrivers to extract the pin.

I thought it might be a tool thing of some sort. However, the wire/connector in my car is a much older style. Its literally a holder for the types of wires/connectors you might see anywhere around a car: a wire ends in a small fitting that slides over another "spade" like fitting. In this case the plastic holder just holds 8 of these wires which are then plugge in to the ECU. So its not exactly like the style of pin you pictured. But maybe the removal is similar? I need to get a small screwdriver in there and see if I can release it?

No one at a Volvo dealer ever did this but once. Then they used a pair of needle nose vise-grips and closed the hose and set idle to 450 or thereabouts. Or take throttle off and clean it. Loosen stop screw. tap and seat throttle and then open it and close gently. Turn screw in until it contacts and then a tad more than a 1/4 turn. Readjust idle switch.

What are you trying to fix?

I'm going over some things because my idle is low/lumpy. Never stalls but isn't very smooth. Drives on the road just fine, only an issue at idle.
I've been going over all the basics and have been wanting to "reset" base idle according to the book once I do a few more things.
So far all I've uncovered is the timing was way advanced and the dwell for fuel mixture is a little lower than specs at 39.
Later this week I'm going to replace the injector seals, pull the throttle body to clean and replace gasket, and have a look at the hoses once some of that stuff is removed.
First thing I did was go through the basic components of the K Jet by using the Green book procedures, all the basic parts are working/test fine.
What hose do you close off to set base idle? I think removing the #12 wire as the book says just takes the idle control out of the equation (this is a K Jet with California setup, has the idle controlled more like an LH engine).
thanks,
Klook
