1992 model 960 dies while warm

Post by vol960orl »

After driving for about 30 minutes to an hour the car dies, it does not respond to acceleration. 5 to 15 minutes later it will start again and drive run for another 10 miles. While driving short distances it continued to work for over a month, until the next longer trip. I have changed the heat sensor and the fuel filter. Please help with as many suggestions as possible

next time it dies remove the fuel filler cap,if you hear a vacuum sucking in, that was the problem, tank venting not working. After you have opened the cap and released vacuum, car will start immediately if that was the problem.
Another possibility is a bad coil. Have you checked for trouble codes for both fuel and ignition?

Also check your fuel pump relay, earlier models had bad soldering which cause high resistance or shutting off the fuel pump. Never had this happen but heard of some who just resolder it rather than replacing it.

Is the Check Engine Light on?

These 960's also had problems with the coolant temp sensors (is this the heat sensor you replaced, at the back of the cylinder head?)and the cam position sensors. The fuel pump and MAF sensor are also possibilities.

You need to check the codes on pin 2 of the diagnostic connector.

Thanks for the courteous replies; I did change the heat sensor, one that goes under the water house and thermostast junction; if there is another heat sensor, I do not know where it is; I got one that was a little different but did not find the site so i returned it and eschanged it for the one that I replaced. Also I did replace the fuel cap, my daughter drove it for about three days without it, and it was rainy season those days (in Florida). It seems that I will need a real shop manual, since some things are hard to find, such as the fuel pump relay, MAF sensor, or the tank venting mechanism?.... Well, again friends, wish me luck, I wanted this realiable, safe auto to hold my 19 yr daughter in callege, she is only a sophomore.

The coolant temp sensor for the engine is at the back of the engine, right below the two heater hoses. It has a gray 2 pin connector.

These were the cause of many starting and running problems on early 960's.

The one you replaced is for the temperature gauge.

It's doubtfully much if any water got into the tank from having the cap off.

Did you check for codes?

A 1-2-3 code is for the temp sensor.
