Can anyone give me symptoms of a bad fuel filter?

Post by jking4020 »

My 02 xc70 has bogging and starting issues. What all symptoms come up when the fuel filter\electronic throttle body go bad? Anyone?

ETM will be hunting for idle, typically. Clogged fuel filter will be choking behavior, typically.

- Clogged Fuel Filter: car lethargic during acceleration.

- Bad Throttle Body: uneven rpm at idle.
I cleaned the TB in my 2005 XC90 and posted the DIY photos in XC90 forum. Very very simple thing to do, no need to remove the Intake Manifold.

Hmm ok cool. My car has plenty of power on acceleration. But hesitates when starting off from a stop. And when driving. Like ill let off throttle to coast and when i give it throttle again it will hesitate. And the idle is rough. I was thinkin it might be fuel filter.

Doesn't sound like a fuel filter. That should only matter during heavy throttle when more fuel needs to pass through.

Well damn ok. Any ideas on what the rough idle and hesitation on start outs would be? Bad injectors? Codes show bad map sensor.

Tons of causes spanning ignition and fuel

How old are plugs and ignition coils?

Check induction path by removing fat hoses, check for splits, reclamp tightly.

Fuel problems unlikely on P2 models, especially if things work well under load

Codes under rough running are unreliable, so don’t treat them as a Gospel.

I believe MAP sensors are not cheap things so do what everybody says to do all the time.

And that is to cross the T's and dot the I's with all the cheap stuff first. Just change the fuel filter and as abscate suggested, make sure the plugs aren't "old and closed". Checking the large air handling hoses is "always" a first thing to do.

Add a 20 oz. bottle of Techron concentrate before a stint of local driving.

I wasn't aware that the coils aged. I know they can crack and go to ground prematurely. Removal and CAREFUL examination is in order. Look for cracks and carbon tracks.

Have you even looked at your ETM? You do have the old style ETM and it may have worn out it's mylar strip.

How many miles are on your '01 XC-70? Does the air filter have 80,000 miles on it...easy stuff does get overlooked.

Well...fuel filter is replaced. Vac lines seem good. Large air lines look good. Plugs are new. Coils look ok. Timing belt is new. Next to new air filters. Pcv is cleaned out. Only has 196k miles. So young for an 02. Gonna replace fuel rail in the future. The project moves on. Still hesitates n idles rough. Oh well. Why do I love these cars?
