I just looked at the end of the pulley and can only see a small bolt in the centre. Any advice on how the pulley/ clutch is held on would be much appreciated.

I’m not sure we use the same compressor on our cars but it is usually a single M6 bolt to remove the clutch, then a snap ring to release the pulley and bearing. Technically a puller is specified for the removal but I’ve done it on the bench with hand tools. Doing that from underneath might suck.

I did exactly that: replacing the AC pulley bearing in my 1998 S70 GLT w 165K miles in-situ, the DIY is in the P80 forum. You can search for it, all the detail is there.

Another thought...at that age mileage, may be a brand new compressor is not a bad idea...

The clutch is a splined fit onto the compressor shaft, it will be nicely rusted on. I knocked it off with two wood wedges as shown above.

The shims which are the VIDA approved method for adjusting AC clutch gap go on the nose of the splined compressor shaft and ride on the M6 bolt. Not too tight on the M6, it doesn't do any spinning work.

I think the clearance on the P2s is not as good as the P80s due to the hoodline - even on my bastard 99, there is no space for work on the AC clutch side. I could only put one shim in at a time, then rotate when I did the bread clip ziptie fix
