2003 Volvo XC 90 T6 Start up issues -- FPR???

Post by tgoodeill »

We have a 2003 Volvo XC 90 2.9L T6 and I believe I am having fuel pressure regulator issues. Can anyone help me on where to find it? A picture would be great if you can provide one, but I'll take any sort of direction at this point.

Thank you!

Are you sure that your car has a FPR? From what I am seeing it does not - but hey, I have been wrong many times.

Can you provide more symptoms of your problem - maybe you have a bad fuel pump or filter?

The XC series uses a pressure sensor on the fuel rail and electronics to regulate fuel pump duty cycle , NOTO a vacuum controlled FPR like P80 cars

There was a recent detailed thread by shockwave on troubleshooting his V8 XC90, I’ll try to find and link

On the 2003 XC90 the fuel pump and fuel pressure is regulated by the ECM. However if the fuel delivery system cannot deliver enough pressure for one reason or another, all the regulation in the world will not bring it up.

2003 XC90 T6 did not have the ECM controlled fuel pressure. The fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel pump module. Specifically it is built into the cap that is held by the threaded ring into fuel tank.
What is happening to make you think it is FPR?

Not sure on the FPR, but if you suspect a pressure problem, you need to measure for it. You can "rent " a fuel pressure gauge at most parts stores. Running pressure should be between 3.75bar-3.95bar or ~54-57psi. Rest pressure should remain above 2bar/29psi for 20 minutes after pump shuts off. Just measure from the shraeder valve at the end of the fuel rail.

I'm not seeing a fuel pressure sensor on the T6. Check all hoses/pipes on the intake for leaks, cracks, splits etc. Also, would help if you have any way to read/ have codes read.

Thank you all for your responses. Basically, when turning the ignition, it can take nearly 10 seconds for the car to turn over (although it sounds like it is trying). Sometimes, it sounds like it turns over and then dies. To be honest, I simply thought it was the FPR because it sounds like a lot of volvos have this issue and it sounded like a quick fix. Also, there is no code to read. Not sure why, but there isn't.

Is the pump for sure priming when you turn the key to position 2? It should prime and be audible for 2-3 seconds. No prime would make that happen.

Diagnosing a modern car by symptom basically doesn’t work.

For a poor/ nostart with good cranking, measure fuel pressure at rail, pull plugs and evaluate coils, finally measure compression

All the Volvo’s that had FPR issues are a decade older than yours in design
