New owner with a few problems

Post by TXFAM6 »

Ok where can I start. First off I am enjoying this car more and more everyday, and I will enjoy it more with the air is fixed lol. But first some serious stuff.
1. First off my headlights in the off position still turn on with i turn on my vehicle and stay on.
2. I have the 2.4T and it has a tick, will this be taken care of with a heavier oil and oil stabilizer or is there a more serious problem.
3. My spedometer intermits from working and not working, when it works the milage counts but when it doesnt it wont count. Everything else works in the cluster its just that center area. I have to cycle the car on and off for it to work.
4. My power locks i didnt get a keyless entry remote just a single key, I already ran into the security system locking me out and I had to use my key to disengage it from the drivers door. I am looking for keyless entry now on amazon. also all my door locks choose when to work as far as open and closing from my drivers door control. Is this a drivers door control issue or do I need to replace the other three power locks.

I know this is alot but hopefully i can get some help.

Hello!

Since I can't quite understand 1 and 4 because I don't understand what you're trying to say i will answer to 2 and 3:
2) Do an oil and filter change wirh the oil recommended in your owner's manual. Uf you don't have one 10w-40 or 5w-40 or 5w-30 is a good starting point. After that, try driving it above 4000 rpm for a few minutes. That should clear up all dirt from the lifters. Change the oil again as soon as it turns black.
3) i can't see what year your car is, but it could be related to an ABS module failure, especially if it is a 96 or later car. This should illuminate the tracs and abs lights and abs would most likely not work. If they are not on check if the bulbs are burnt out by turning the ignition key to position 2 and see if the abs and tracs lights come on. Then report back.

1) There is a small (3mm ish) screwdriver hole, next to the headlight switch. If I remember correctly, fully left (press in and turn left) will cause the lights to be off in 0, side lights in the middle setting (with front fogs if you want/ have) and headlight when the selector is fully to the right.

The rest I will leave to more knowledgable people, although the power lock shouldn't be an issue. If you lock with the key at driver door, all the other doors should lock and then unlock. If multiple locks don't work at the same time, I would guess that the fault was within the drivers door or within the central locking module. You would have to check the wiring diagram to be sure. If it is only 1 lock, and always the same one, I would guess at that lock being faulty, or in need of some cleaning and lubrication!

Good luck!

To explain #1 a bit better, so I have a 1998 S70. it has three positions for the lights. OFF/parking/headlights. In the OFF position as soon as turn keys to start vehicle they come on.

Yes only my ABS light is on.

As for #4 its wierd. so we have a drivers door control for power locks. It doesnt open all of them, just the drivers door. Occasionally it will open 2 out of the 4. I have to manually reach around to open the rest of them.

As for #1: the car has daytime running lights. Any time you turn on the key, the headlights come on. Unless you move the switch to the parking position. You can alter the behavior with the little screw as explained by Liggywuh. It is explained pretty well in the owner's manual, look in there if you have one or look here if you want to see it online http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/199 ... 2.htm#pg26.

As for #3, https://www.midwest-abs.com

As for #4 the problem is probably in the separate locks not the system, this is very common. You can fix it if you pull them out apart and replace the aging thermal fuse with a piece of metal.

(1) Daytime running lights are active, required in Canada but in the US you can turn them off. The read arrow is pointing at the Daytime Running Light Switch, not a screw.
