Flashing arrow

This morning before i started the car...out of nowhere i got flashing arrow along with flashing E from transmission mode with key in pos.II.Remained ON when i started the car.
Read the codes with vol-fcr....one dtc logged...unknown code???
Cleared the code...test drove it...checked the codes again....no codes.
What the hell happened?
If there was something wrong with it i guess i would got something more specific...more specific code.
Transmission wasn't in limp mode....it shifted fine except flashing arrow and E.

I've had an intermittent flashing arrow from a bad TPS, keep an eye on that. In that case there was eventually a TPS code.

Along with a flashing "E" on transmission switch?
No engine codes except for SAS for last 15 years.

Could be just a coincidence....because it appeared before starting it and the day before everything was ok....it's daily driver along with an XM.
It hasn't appeared again.
It had one "unknown" code logged.
Did you had that too?

My 95 10V had a flashing arrow after startup in winter. It happened while shifting from R to D and back and went off quite immediately. Never had any problems orherwise.

I don't remember it throwing any "unknown" codes. What was the exact code?

I had it once few years ago when i removed TCM for some reason and forgot to insert it back in and i turned the key in pos.II...

Flashing arrow- replaced pnp- flushed transmission fluid- been driving until I can figure out the problem. Two days age all of a sudden while driving it goes into limp mode - then after I pull over no forward or reverse. I turned off engine raked the shift knob 20x started up arrow gone fully driveable. I continued to work parked for the day drove home light again flashing. Today drained fluid from sump and refilled 3.5 quarts+- later drove great for a few miles and then no forward or reverse - engine only revs arrow flashing. I had to stop and turn car off 3 times and restart to get the car home. I noticed that the wires to the small 2 prong plug connector that goes to the ABS module are melted (wire coating crumbling). With the transmission functioning fine one moment to gone the next. I can’t believe the transmission is shot. I also don’t understand the relationship between the ABS & ECU and transmission issues. Anyone have any ideas on what to do next?

Relationship between automatic transmission module(TCM) and abs/tracs module is TRACS...traction control.
Next step would probably be to replace those melted wires,which is obvious,and to scan modules for codes.
If your problem is mechanical...the problem wouldn't disappear with moving the shift knob back and forth few times along with turning the car on & off.
DTC will tell you what's wrong.

Thank you for your response! I have an inexpensive Harbor freight scanner that only displays a red led light indicating “yup something’s wrong”. Your response confirmed that the issue may not be mechanical. The melted wires are highly suspect but are hard wired to the pump motor through the housing on the motor- the wire and connector are only 3-4 inches long. Maybe I can splice them. This is my first post - I’m a 62 year old guy that has no mechanical training 2 old Volvo’s and limited resources. My goal is to get 3 more years out of the v70 if possible.
