1980 264 GLE - Bad ECM?

Post by henrikb13 »

The brother to a colleague of mine has a 1980 Volvo 264 GLE which suddenly shut down and is now at the local "foreign car" mechanic in our small town. He says it has a bad ECM but seems a bit reluctant to get involved. He asked me for advice and now I asking you all: Any experience with this car or problem? I assume ECM stands for Electronic Control Module but I have never had problem with this on my Volvos (1990 240 and 1996 850). I have not been able to find any on the web so far - most information and parts are for the 2.3 I-4, not the V-6. Can anybody help? Thanks

There is an ignition module responsible for using a pulsed signal from the ignition pickup coil in distributor. That could make it not have spark. They are pretty reliable. The pickup coil in distributor is more likely to break a wire from timing advance movement in my experience.
There are modules for the lambda sond fuel mixture control and for idle speed regulation. These last two usually do not result in engine failing to start.

All relevant info can be found here: Volvo 240 & 260 service manual

Here's a good starting place: Volvo 240 & 260 ignition system service & repair manual (all models)

If your mechanic is not old enough, he may not understand. Pickup coil is located on a rotating plate, and its wire, attached to it and distributor's peripheral core, over time will break its copper wires internally. Since there is a rubber type coating, this will not be seen. This may not be the issue, but mechanics have fumbled the ball when diagnosing a defective wire.
