Back door seakers size for 850 Volvo

Alright, I had some tips on what speakers the 850 has. i was told that theres 5 1/4 in all 4 doors, 3 1/2 as tweeters and 6x8 or 6x9's in the back. well i replaced the front 2 door speakers. they were 5 1/4, but when I went to the 2 back doors, it didn't look like 5 1/4. They look like 5x7. Am I right or are they really 5 1/4? And what about the back, are those 6x9's? let me know, thanks guys. I really appreciate it.

The rear doors are tricky. I used 5 1/4" speakers but I had to modify the plastic "cones" to get it done right.

You can use 6x9's on the rear deck but you will need to cut the deck and add aftermarket grills. I used 5x7/6x8 (they claim to be both) but I also used the OEM speakers - Hacked up - as a mounting plate to get them back into the OEM grills. More details are here:

oh, i think i got it, one more thing, how bout the tweeters in the dash? i think there 2 1/4.

I used 3 1/2". The mounting flanges don't mate up but they held just fine with one bolt. There is enough space that you could drill another hole if you wanted to use 2 bolts but getting a drill in under the windshield presents a major challenge.

but how did you get 3 1/2 to fit in the dash? you had to take out the tweeter and the housing and drill a hole?

The OEM tweeters come out as a unit, the speaker and the plate that it sets in. There is are 2 single push pin type connector that secures it to the dash. If you take a small screwdriver and pry up the center of the push pins the whole plate will release and lift out.

The push pins themselves are not visible in this picture (they pop out on the top side of the assembly) but they go through the 2 holes on plastic plate, one on either side, just below the speaker cone.

One of the original OEM holes works great to mount the 3 1/2" speakers. This is how it fits after installed. I unsoldered the OEM connector and soldered it back onto my new speakers.

wow, still kind of confused, i guess it should all come to me when i pop it open. i might just replace the 2 1/4 inch tweeter instead of putting 31/2. oh yea, one more thing, did you replace you stock deck/ cd player? if so was it hard? because i dont know if its connected to a stock amp or not, which would make it hard f it is.

I did on the '96 but not the '94. It is a piece of cake if you buy the wiring harness adapter.

In my case I put the radio in the upper slot and the CD pocket in the bottom slot. I've seen some real cool single din space fillers on eBay that have cup holders that slide out of the face. God knows we are cupholder challenged.

The way to tell if you have an additional power amp for sure (most of them don't) is to pop the radio out and see if there is anything plugged into the DIN connector marked AMP on the back of the radio. If you do have an OEM amp the easiest way to deal with that is to pick up an adapter cable for it as well. You will need a headunit with preamp outputs.

You are correct, the tweeter thing will be real obvious once you pop off the grill.

I think I may have figured out your trepidation about the 3 1/2" speakers in the dash. For the purpose of the picture I posted I popped off the OEM grill. After the speaker is installed the grill goes back on and everything looks factory - and sounds good.

Thank you all for the info on rear door speakers. I also may have to replace one or both in my 97 855 so this may become handy.

On a related note: how about the rear 855(wagon) pillar speaker size?
I get no sound from mine, so either they were never installed, or possibly
got disconnected by the first owner after they started failing.
What is their size and impedance?

Are they even worth installing? I read comments that it's much better to get
a sub in the 850, and skip both rear doors and rear deck/pillar speakers.

Thoughts?

Ok, Thanks Lee, you been great, I replaced my front door speakers and i installed a deck also, thanks to all you guys help. now about the back door speakers, you mentioned that you had to rearrange the housing a little, what you mean by that? did 5 1/2 rounds didn't fit perfectly?
