1998 s70 TDI sudden loss of power Topic is solved

Hi all,

On Sunday while driving on the highway I experienced a sudden loss of power, the cars "pull" reduced significantly from one moment to the next and has not comeback since. I was doing about 120 KPH at the time.

Now the engine feels very weak and the "kick" that usually comes at around 2000 RPM is gone. It feels like the turbo is not providing any boost. The car is still drivable and is not acting funny on idle or is jerking or anything like that.

Considering the sudden change I am thinking it is something mechanical, but there is no unusual noise. Also no warning light is indicating that anything is wrong, should the ECU not indicate a fault if the boost target is not met?

My plan is to start disassembling the intake system before the turbo to see if I can spot anything. If anyone have any other ideas for how to start troubleshooting it would be very much appreciated! The car is a 98 s70 diesel with the D5252T. I know this model was not sold in North America but hopefully I can still get some help here.

Probably you're on the right way. Does it have any kind of extensive smoking? Usually dying turbo produces oil-ish smoke.

Intercooler piping? The T5s get slow once that happens. So will all TDIs

No, nothing like that thankfully. Turned out to be a much simpler issue.

This was it, the hoseclamp on the rubber hose going into the intercooler (the one on the bottom of the intercooler) had snapped and the hose slid off the connection. Pretty simple fix in the end! Most of the hoses seem to be in a pretty bad shape though, so I will go around replacing them all soon.
