Looking at a 2000 V70, supposed to stall

I've been looking at a low mileage (110K) 2000 V70. Owner reports that it occasionally stalls, then restarts. I have not seen this actually occur. He tells me that he had codes pulled and it indicated a bad TPS, along with a lot of other codes. Does the TPS seem the likely culprit? I think it significant that the car had sat for a few years before he purchased it. It also vibrates from the rear wheel driveshaft, I suppose I will just pull it.

It could be the TPS, but worth swapping the fuel pump relay first. Other codes can get thrown when car shuts down. Depending what the codes are, I'd consider noting them, then clear them all and run the car with a replacement Volvo fuel pump relay and see what happens.

You don't say it clearly, but it looks like you either have a V70XC or V70 AWD as you mention the prop=shaft vibration. Pulling would be the easy out and then decide if you want it re-built (Colorado Drive-shaft) and re-install.

Bigger issue if it is an ETM issue (Xemodex or likes re-build) or possibly a fuel pump failing as AWD are a big job to do compared to a FWD.

Yeah, you have to clear codes and see what comes back. TPS is unlikely culprit

Will disconnecting the batery for an hour clear the codes, or do I need an OBD reader? Too bad about the TPS being unlikely, I happen to have one.

That should do it. Be on the lookout for the seller who has figured out his MM electronic throttle body (ETB, ETM) has pooped the bed and is looking for the sucker to unload the car.

Make sure the ETS light lights up on start up , and the EZtM clicks and whines for 8 seconds on key on.

I finally took the car for a test drive. Generally a pretty nice car, as you would expect with 110k miles. The idle does hunt a bit between 800-1100. Twice while I was driving it, it stalled. Pulled over and it started right up. Seemed to run normally otherwise. I pulled into the local O'Reillys and had the codes pulled. The price is quite right, but I would like opinions as to whether I should just run away from it. Here are the codes. Many came up "no definition" so I have Googled them for a result

P0743 Torque Converter Solenoid.

P1550 No Definition ABS?

P1238 No Definition Turbo Control Valve?

P1171 No Definition Fuel Trim Upper Limit?

P0121 TPS

P1618 No Definition

P0134 O2 Sensor

Look at all those vacuum hoses and look for leaks and splits. If you can't find any, it is probably in the ETM

Personally, I’d consider general condition and documented maintenance as more important in your decision whether to buy car or not. The stalling issue will be fixed for a few hundred worse case and some short term aggravation. If you plan to keep it for another 100k mi, this is insignificant. The other codes may or may not be significant, the stalling can cause false false reads.

Faust - were those the stored codes or codes after clearing?

Reset the CEL and see what pends.

Get a mirror and look for a white label or yellow on the ETM, at 110k, Ill bet it is a white label
