06 XC70 help with engine noise

Any speculation on what the problem is here?

I will talk to the owner later this week about what happened when, until then would appreciate any thoughts such as how severe, what to check, etc. Engine is at 151k and I think it has had a mostly easy life, though I do not yet know about its maintenance routine.

Valves? lifters? Could it actually be the bottom?

Best case scenario the timing belt skipped 3 teeth and putting it back makes it all quiet down and run another 150k!

That does sound like a bad lifter vs bottom end to me.

It's not a failed front wheel bearing, is it?

Sounds like no oil supply to head. Dry tappets and CVVT hubs popping.

In that case could it be a clogged pickup tube, or must be worse like an oil pump failure or some other blockage there?

I'll find out how suddenly it came on, if they kept driving it. And inspect for sludge, check the oil level.
