04 xc70 engine noise

Post by famfeld »

I was told the knocking is the drive belt tensioner. Not sure because it goes away in N or P. The squeaking is constant, but clunking aound goes away. At idle only, goes away when revving or driving

Remove the belt and listen again, if you wait it will soon shred the belt.
When it shredded the belt it made a real mess on mine.

Just checked belt and found crank pulley loose with center bolt missing. Strange how 2 trusted professional mechanics misdiagnosed this!
Thanks for the help

I lost that nut not so long ago, too. My 450 ft-lbs electric impact wrench failed me.

Perhaps this is another good reason to not remove the crankshaft bolt and pulley when changing the timing belt.
