P0108 - MAP reading HIGH after reinstalling 3.2 intake

Post by xHeart »

CEL P0108 after the recent 2013A XC90 Cooling System Service which required removing intake manifold.

I'm guessing MAP is reading too much fresh air entering the throttle then optimal ratio at idle.

There is no MAF in 3.2, right?

Denso uses MAF and MAP. Make sure the seal didn't get out of position on the MAP down low on intake, 15 in illustration.

MAF is not as accurate at low air mass at idle so MAP is used since it is accurate at low throttle and goes to max signal long before wide open throttle.

Is the SEAL on the MAP same as item 16 in illustration?

Pulled the harness connector away and off the sensor last night. The sensor appears to be seating firmly and attached to manifold. I wish there was a zoom-in function to examine it closely. A gentle wiggle did not change or displace it from its location.

But when I went to plug the harness connector back on the sensor, the connector slides over fine but did not click -- tried it few times. Did the connector snap tab malfunction or break?

Multimeter shows 4.78v at green wire, but I'm not able to get continuity beep for ground.

Both connector and sensor are doing fine. A goodbye to P0108!
Thank you Jimmy57!

Is it possible the ignition was on when the MAP sensor was unplugged?

No. The negative (-) terminal from the battery was removed before I started the cooling system service -- draining coolant for t-stat replacement, etc. What I understand now is that the connector was never plugged back on to sensor till last night.

But learned a lot about the workings of MAP sensor, and how-to test the wires and sensor.

I'm pulling a 'Historic Fault' of P0108 and P2227 after re installing my manifold on my 2010 3.2 XC60

My MAP sensor plug wasn't clicking and it was bothering me so I was going to maybe try a zip tie on it just to keep it from moving much. Found that wouldn't work as I didn't really have anything to tie it to. So I was kind of thinking of just moving on and keeping an eye on it.

Now, I had started the car a handful of times since putting in the new alternator and getting everything back together to make sure it wasn't throwing any codes and everything seemed fine. SO one last time before I put the bottom cover back on, I disconnected the map sensor connection to just feel how loose it was one last time and it wasn't exactly bad so I decided to put all up and get it off the ramps.

Then of course the check engine light comes on. And I'm unable to just reset it with my tool apparently.

It IS possible that the sensor connector wasn't pushed all the way in the last time I started the car. I went back down, took the cover off, pushed it tighter and it did move ever so much so I'm thinking that's possible. So I'm guessing regardless, the code is stuck? I've had trouble turning off check engine lights on this particular volvo on other things too.

SO I presume now I have to go to a shop with a VIDA to turn off that light? Or is it possible my fumbling broke the MAP? It has always jiggled a little which was kind of unsettling but this is the first one I plugged/unplugged on the XC.

Is the only way to remove the sensor to take the manifold back off or is there any tricks to getting it out to take a look at without doing all that work?

Thanks and happy holidays.

Brian

It is tricky, I had similar issue. The connector must click to be secure. Item 17 is sensor & 18 is bushing in above diagram.
The procedure for pulling off the connector at MAP requires turning MAP so the connector is in clear to come off. Plugging is back on requires same procedure so it is fully inserted, and then rotate the MAP back to its functioning position.

It may take few tries - remember opening a prescription bottle and then putting the lid back on.

Else, you'll have CEL. However, once the connector is properly seated over the MAP and turned to locked position, the code should clear without VIDA.

I took the MAP out and tried to get it to click now that I had it in my hand and it seems like the clip just lost the spring that is needed to make it clip. I shimmed the clip from above and while it still didn't click, it's in tight and not overly willing to slip out.

Still getting the code and my meter won't clear it...but it's also one of those bluetooth things connected to the torque pro app. Clears codes fine on my other cars but have never had any luck clearing even simple codes on this car. I do have another meter I used to put the rear calipers into maintenance mode so I'll dig that up and see if it has any code-clearing abilities. Otherwise I'll have to find someone local with a better one.

Thank you for following up :)
