2000 V70 XC CVVT Hub bolt

Post by ems_kws »

Hello,
The cam seals are leaking and I need to get to the one behind the CVVT hub BUT the torx on the cap stripped out. 🤔 (add it to the list of lessons from owning this piece of swedish hell)
Anyway when I get it out where can I get a new cap? IDP and FCP didn't seem to have one. Is it a dealer or scrap yard part?
Kevin

Anyone want to buy a 2000 V70 XC? I spend as much time working on it as I do enjoying it.

Tap in the next size up, after you buy a brand new bit from a quality toolmaker. A new t60 might work too, if you give it about 100 light raps with a hammer

If I recall the problem with VVT bolt removal is lack of space. Before doing any "resizing" try finding a shorter bit and tapping it squarely in. Then apply torque with it remaining straight.

I have seen two approaches here, some remove the torx bit from the socket and have it welded to the end of a long flat bar. If I recall I removed the bit end and used a beefy spanner wrench (I think it was 8 or 10mm) on the shaft of the torx and then an extension to break the bolt. Key is to keep play to a minimum on the breaker bar and avoid flexing the spanner wrench.

Otherwise I believe the instructions are to remove some opposite plastic pieces and/or jack up the engine (which requires addressing the motor and related mounts. Key is to use a good quality torx bit and have it fully seated - then apply straight torque. On another engine I recall using a shallow 3/8" breaker bar, short Torx socket and adjusting the engine height and removing some opposite plastic.

Also, make sure which direction the bolt must be turned for removal. On some cars this type of part is opposite thread - don't recall in this instance. You need to look it up. Torque is very high on this bolt and it is problematic.

The cams need to be locked in back, and you can remove it with the bit bring turned by a closed end wrench put over the bit first. I had to loosen and move the engine wire tray to get clearance on my 99

Seat the bit deeply, at least 5mm ...tap tap tap tap.......tap

Thanks
I thought the cap was the head of a bolt. I got the cap that was stripped off and then I was able to remove the bolt.
Is the cap for tue CVVT hub on a 2000 the same as a 2001?

Sorry , I was giving crappy guidance on the hub bolt, not the cap

Volvo parts Lisle says the cap fits many variants from 1999-2009...c
