92 240 engine problems

Post by bin1976 »

greetings, new to the forum have a quick question...i was given a 1992 240 w/ 103xxx miles on the engine. the family member who had it before me hadnt used the car in months, and i plan on giving it a total tuneup, oil change etc this wknd.

hwvr driving it today she stalled out on me. always while stopped in traffic. 1st the engine almost stalled then the service light comes on...and then all the lights came on, and poof. nothing. i can put her in park & turn the engine over and next time im in traffic, same thing. Anything I can do other than a total diagnostic? Any help would be appreciated!

Also any suggestions for a good volvo mechanic in the southern Maryland area? Thanks in advance.

Welcome!

It may be a quick question, but not such a quick answer.

First, when diagnosing any problem, and before you touch anything, (to avoid inducing any phantom codes) you should check DTC's. There is tons of info on this site about how to do it, and what the codes mean.

Next I would clean the throttle body.

Here how I service the throttle body on your Volvo;

1. Remove T/B
2. Clean bore and plate thoroughly with brake or carb cleaner and an old toothbrush.
3. Loosen and back off the idle stop screw and idle switch.
4. Bring stop screw so it just touches lever and turn another 1/2 turn, tighten nut.
5. Adjust Idle switch
6. Install T/B with new gasket
7. install throttle linkage and make sure it isn't holding the throttle open.
8. Pull the ECM fuse to reset the ECM adaptation.
9. Warm engine to operating temp, pinch off hose from air pipe to the idle valve, rpm should drop 200 rpms or so, but shouldn't stall! If it stall, re-adjust the stop screw until you get the correct results.

Also, if it were my car, I would replace the fuel pump relay, and maybe even the RPM sensor, because they will probably fail eventually. Both have a date code on them, so you can tell if they've been replaced.

Last, but not least, take some time and search through the forum and you will find tons of great advice and info about your new car.

The 92 is a great car and should last for a long long time.

Enjoy,

3B
