More exhaust woes: Break right after catalytic converter

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Oh, just a regular day in the neighborhood when all of a sudden, your exhaust starts to growl.
S70 rusty catalytic converter
S70 rusty catalytic converter
Might be time to cut this out and weld something in...

Can this be welded?

Will head over to Willets Point and see what they say.

It is pretty rusted/rotten for the weld to stick, plus it will need to come out to weld all around. If it's a non turbo it may be easier to undo at the manifold, but the bolts will be rusted solid too so perhaps they will put the torch on them. If you take it out and they try cleaning the opening to put the welder on it, make sure they weld the two parts properly aligned, or it will cause other problems and perhaps crack the flexible downpipe not long after. It will take a skilled guy to do a good job

An aftermarket flex pipe with cat runs for $2-$300 on Ebay but fitting can be troublesome and you may get poor emissions

Yeah, that’s not weldable. Welding will just blow the metal away. Aftermarket lasts 2-3 years or bite the bullet and get one from FCP for life.

I've had 3 with that problem. Midas stuck a 6 inch piece of new pipe into the back of the cat and welded it in to the rest of the existing exhaust. Never heard back from any of them. Won't say what it cost because my buddy owns the shop but even at retail I think it's a $50 fix tops. They removed nothing but the crossmember and I was out of there in an hour in all 3 cases. One thing I just won't do myself is exhaust. Those guys weld WAAAY better than I do.
