Have you tried rerouting the wire for the crank position sensor away from the block/bellhousing and maybe wrapping it with foil surrounded by tape or conduit referenced by Volvo TSB 228011:

Also, I'm not sure, you might still have a grounding issue such as at the main battery cable at the bottom of the firewall or between the engine to subframe or subframe to chassis. Wet weather aggravates corrosion at these terminals. Note those heavy cable wires rot from the inside out, it may not be obvious from just looking at them.

...and another update: I finally got around to replacing the starter. Wet/colder weather brought about the slow startup and near stalling again so I slapped a new starter in. The starting RPMs have increased substantially in comparison to the old (FoMoCo) one and starts are much smoother now. It has only been a couple days so I can't say yet that it fixed all the SSS issues, but looks promising. I've said that before though.

Everything is perfect now. I suppose it was actually just the starter the whole time, well probably 90% of it was anyway. In the meantime I have replaced several wear items and at 160k on the odo the car still runs like new.

Not so sure on the octane being a myth, at least for my old V50 T5. Once I ran only 87 I had no issues. Volvo advised this as a solution. Not sure on your car.
Still, fuel pressure should be checked out and eliminated as a potential issue.
