Belt had jumped quite a few teeth. Reset timing but the head is toast. Not really sure what has happened, something maybe flew up from the road and got caught by the belt? Tensioner is bent and belt is shredding on outer side.

My guess, if all the pulleys rotate well and were properly torqued down, is the belt walked. I say this because of the belt wear. On my V50 I had a belt walk caused by the crank gear coming out. Fortunately it was caught before major damage occurred.

On yours, I speculate after the belt walked it got caught up in the tensioner and shredded and bent the timing guide.

I assume you don't have an engine belly pan on your car as this would have stopped a foreign object from entering the engine area.

Pulling the head to assess the damage this week. I only measured compression on # 4 & 5 after timing was reset and it was zero. Might be cheaper to pull a head from the junk yard and give to the machine shop so I dont have to shell out for all bent valves. Head is only around $60 and next weekend is 40% off.

So I was planning a trip to lkq pick your part to get a head that would hopefully be in better condition than the one I have. Then came the rain and when that happens all Californians including me hide inside and expect the worst.
Last night I came home with one hour of daylight left expecting to pull the head. I started draining the engine oil just to find out the drain plug is cross-threaded and does not seal. Great I’ll drop the pan then. Dropped the subframe but there must be a way to deal with that without taking the pan off, I’ll investigate. While contemplating that I did one AT drain. Think it’s safe to say it was never replaced within the 106K this car has been on the road. Absolutely filthy and I’m praying the internals are still ok with that junk flowing around in there.

Xheart and I recently dropped and cleaned the oil sumps on our XC70s. Only removed parts are splash shield, trans mount, oil cooler, and fuel line bracket. After dropping the rear side of oil sump from trans you get the front off by angling it through the subframe.

Yes I dropped oil pans before but for other reasons. I’ll see if there is a possibility to get a helicoil in there.

Drain plug problem sorted! The drain plug that came with the car didn’t look like oem, kind of short also. Went to a hardware store and found a longer bolt. Worked like a charm, one problem less to deal with.

Had a little bit of time with the car after work today. Put subframe back and also put in new transmission fluid to compensate what I drained.
