1996 Volvo 850 R - Help with error codes. Tks from Brazil

Post by marioguernelli »

Hey guys,

I have a 1996 Volvo 850 R and read today a fews code erros with a flash code reader and would like to ask members to help me out with the potential causes. Sorry, these might sound basic to you guys, but not a lot of info down here (Brazil) on these topics.

Truly appreciate the support.

Thanks

Mario

I think he's using the OBDII connector with a flash code reader, not the under-hood thingie or an "actual" OBDII device. So his format is correct. :)

OP; the first thing you should do is clear all those codes, drive the car for a while and see what comes back. Intermittent situations can be read as errors, and the different CUs can set codes that aren't really relevant. If you clear them and they come back within a short amount of time, you can start tracing causes.

Your 121 code could be a MAF error - check and make sure it's plugged in when you've cleared the code, take a peek at the connector and see that it's not full of dirt or something. Unless you're running rich with black smoke and that "burned dust" smell to the exhaust, it could be a transient code. But clear them, drive, check again, post what comes back here, and we'll try to help.

No... I don't think that's correct. 5 would be the interrupted ground for initiating the reading and clearing the codes, wouldn't it?

Quite right, getting mixed up with the interrupted ground. Carry on, ignore my lack of functioning braincells.

Hey guys appreciate the support. Yes, my model has a OBD2 reader at the center console under the radio and I read the codes with a home made flash reader based on the discussions I saw here at the forum.

Tne car is really running rich. I don't get black smoke however it smells non-burned gas. I tried cleaning the MAF with the electronic contact cleaner however, it did not work out. I am also getting lambda light on the dash. I have ordered a new MAF - will try it out once arrives.

Do you guys thing the Lambda could be o2s sensor?

tks again

Mario

In my case, the MAF went first and then the O2 wasn't far behind. Could be either/or, but since you're getting a code for the MAF, that should be top of the list in any case. The O2 would set some long term fuel trim code or other, in most cases.

Remember that you can't use anything other than original Bosch MAF on these cars. For some reason, all the aftermarket units we've seen have failed to work properly.
