Help, Advice, Owners' Discussion and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's stylish, distinctive P2 platform cars sold as model years 2001-2007 (North American market year designations).
My 225/45R17 tyres on my 2006 V70 need replacing soon, I'm considering a higher profile 50% or 55%
Anybody has experience with 225/50R17 or 225/55R17 ? My wheels are Otrera 7.5" wide.

If you go with a different Aspect Ratio and don't want to throw off your speed indicator and odometer. You will need to go with a smaller wheel and/or a narrower tire.
For example:
With 225/50R17 your speed and distance would be 3.5% higher then indicated.
With 225/55R17 your speed and distance would be 7.0% higher then indicated.
With 205/50R17 your speed and distance would be 0.4% higher then indicated.
With 185/55R17 your speed and distance would be 0.15% higher then indicated.
With 225/50R16 your speed and distance would be 0.4% lower then indicated.
With 225/55R16 your speed and distance would be 3.0% higher then indicated.
Another possible option is to reprogram the car for a different tire size. Somebody with a P2 would need to look in VIDA and see if the tire size parameter can be changed without a software update. All my Volvos are Bosch Motronic 4.4 or Siemens EMS 2000.
Wanted to add that usually - not sure if everywhere around the world, the factory tire size specification is to be found behind the gas filling door. That tire dimension (including the tire wall size) has been used to calibrate the car speedometer.
Thanks to all feedback, I do realise that speedo wil be off, I can compensate for that with a tiny sticker on my speedo, or use my GPS.
I'm interested in actually experience with these higher tyres on my 2006 V70, rear wheels should be fine but front tyres will they rub when cornering ? I drive with light loads, never have passengers.
My 2006 V70 has the Orpheus 17x7.5 wheel, and the tire sticker in the door jamb calls for (and I have the wheels fitted with) 235/45R17. Tirerack.com lists that as the only available-from-the-factory 17-inch tire size, at least here in the states. If that was your case, I would think you could go down one size in width, while going up one size in aspect ratio, to 225/50R17. But you’re saying you already have 225/45R17 tires fitted. Was that the factory-installed size on those wheels? Maybe the factory tire specs are different than the US models?
