So I'd honestly be better off designing this system from the ground up? Rebuilding the turbo myself as well as learning how to tune the car myself?
The only reason I'm really even considering this is because I've already got a daily driver and this is really my summer project. So I really want to it to be a learning experience as well as an opportunity to build a truly unique Volvo!
Considering that I'm trying to make cars my future profession, buying tools and equipment I'll need later isnt really a concern i.e. software and hardware.

It might also be worth mentioning that I have a 2003 body and an '05 engine. (B5234T3) if that really changes anything

The profession is changing oil and brake jobs, not doing “ fun stuff”. Unless you can stake yourself your own shop, and learn how to manage both customers and three or four employees who may or may not show up that day, you won’t make a living as a speed shop. The VIDA tool you need to do all the tasks on a P2 plus tuning hardware will set you back $10,000 plus. It might be obsolete in 5 years , too.
Research this carefully.

Any work on a car to me is "fun stuff" because unlike most of my generation (I'm 19) I love to sit down and actually learn about what I'm doing and "solve the puzzle" so to speak.
And management is always gonna be an issue because you can really only count on what you KNOW and not someone else and I realize that and of course I'll take time to work out everything.
But back to the task at hand! If I want to sit down and learn ECM/ECU coding and tuning, what software do I need to look at? I vaguely remember my father using a old version of Megasquirt on a laptop directly wired into an old '84 Jetta he had tuned up.. is MS a viable option for ME7 tuning?
Also what forums or resources can I use to jump in to learning all of this? I understand the basics of how to read/write code. But I'm guessing I'd likely need something or someone to teach me the in-depth stuff.

You’re generation is more curious than most and the internet has flattened the information gap, as long as you can sort out the trash! We do poke fun at you for being so woke sometimes, but I have deep respect for your empathy and awareness of others that are your hallmarks.
We have some tune discussion in our Performance forum , but there is more on Swede speed and brick?
I program instruments but know nothing about tuning cars, sorry.

I do have an instrument cluster I'm pretty sure needs to be married to my car... Not sure who can do it or how but my father mentioned something about it needing to be re-soldered I.
This was dad's car till he blew the head gasket (he hit a pothole, cracked the rad and overheated) which is why I'm rebuilding it. Again, a nice summer project and a good way to learn something I can use later in life.. the tune is honestly bc I'm a little jealous of my diesel buddies that can click a switch and move into a different tune lol

If you have twin CVVT on that motor it is pretty much the same as what would have been delivered in 2003 with a T5. Lots of go fast boys are using the XC90 motor of higher capacity as the torque spread is better on the 2521cc engine. It's a bore and stroke increase to get to that capacity. If you were to just do bore alone by re-sleeving the liners and use 2.4T pistons you would wind up at 2435cc.
My 2001 T5 runs a 2.4T motor from an XC which complements the bigger turbo and T5 tune really well. It must be run on 95 or 98 RON at least to remain knock and ping free. It has so much low down grunt at take-off that dashes to 35mph and the next set of traffic lights are fun if you don't mind the fuel penalty.
A friend of mine had a BSR tuning system on his 2001 S60 T5M as well as larger intercooler. It was pretty hard charging until he wrote it off. He bought an 850 T5 lot long after that.. Let us all know here what you discover out there in performance land...

What's the process for re-sleeving the engine? Super complicated or just precise?
