New to me 99' S70, base, 5-speed, 209k

Post by 850 LPT »

Hello everyone,

I just bought another Volvo last night in my favorite color nautic blue, and with 3 pedals. :D
It was inexpensive and close to me, so I had to go check it out.
You never really know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised that the vitals checked out:

PCV in perfect shape, totally neutral pressure (this blew me away :o )
No leaks around the engine.
Clutch feels fine, no slippage at all, engagement where it should be.
Suspension appears to have been updated not too long ago with orange Konis?
It also has blue springs, which could be H&R but I'm not sure.
No clunks or rattles, even the endlinks are fine.
No dash rattle whatsoever, no squeaks or anything.
Has 2 new front tires, rears are very recent.
Brand new battery too.
No dash light on, except for the coolant reservoir ( not loosing coolant, maybe a bad sensor? )
Parking brake is holding fine.

As far as what it needs, this is my first assessment, although I know there will be a lot more once I get into it:

First order of business is doing the TB with WP. TB was changed around 104k, so it's due but not super overdue.
It has the wrong coolant in it, needs to be changed to Volvo oem.
Oil change.
Tune up.
Power steering reservoir is leaking.
Paint is dull, but has potential.
Interior is filthy, needs deep cleaning.
Front seat bottoms are shot, will look for replacements.
Brakes are crusty.

This car will be a fun project (hopefully) and I can take my time with it once the important stuff is done.
Plus, I am revisiting the idea of teaching my kids how to drive stick.
They both expressed interest and this car is perfect for that.

These Volvo clutches are insane. 270k mi on mine, still mint. Only clutches I've ever seen with more miles on 'em were in long-haul trucks. Seriously, I don't think any car manufacturer designs clutches to last more than 100k.

nice car. 105k on timing belt is an emergency in my opinion, esp as the rollers and pump arn't usually changed on the first go around.
I believe in OEM, but that doesnt mean coolant. I think Prestone is fine. but am ready to learn otherwise.

Dirk doesn't care as he knows I have spares.

I have a spare coolant level sensor too.

Hey guys,

Thanks for comments.

If I recall correctly, 105k is the TB intervall on these newfangled canbus cars. And it is at the top of my list. The water pump thing didn't escape me either. That and the tensioner/ roller are probably the parts that are most concerning.
So I will bring it home and then get preperations on the way to do this before anything else.

Gotta check on those headlight wipers though :? , that and the AC. No idea if that works either.

Good to know Steve, thanks.

You wouldn't happen to have a set of front seats in tan laying around, would you?

Bring that up and we will get that AC blowing ice cubes in no time. I did 5 evaps last summer and have gotten quite decent at them, if I may say so..

Wow, 5 of them, now that's impressive my friend. I might just take you up on that, we'll do it together in half the time and it's way more fun together! Btw. my 850 needs one too I think.

No wood trim, I wish. But it's got the premium package with leather, auto climate control, sunroof etc and the cold weather package too, which is very nice.
