What repairs do you consider a no-brainer when it comes to saving money vs. having a shop do it?

DIY fuel pump might be one of the best savings out there. Haven't done this one yet.

On the other hand, replacing the timing belt scared me and I had it done. The chance of failure brought this "DIY Savings Coefficient" down too far. (Also I had no garage to do it in).

Fuel pump DIY is definately easy... unless you have an AWD...then it's a major nightmare, since almost the entire rear end has to come down to drop the tank....

From a cost point of view:

- Oil changes
- PCV overhaul
- Endlink replacement
- Fuel filter replacement (seriously, 15 bucks for a filter... even on an 98 AWD where you have to take the cargo area apart, it's worth it...)

My 98 needs a timing belt overhaul, no idea when it was done. I'll either order the parts and do it myself, or provide parts and have a local indy shop do it.

Doing repairs is one of those things you start on and get better at and become more brave. Things mentioned are all DIY. You can add all filters to the list, shocks, brakes, Struts, purging transmission, purging brakes, changing coolant hoses, thermostats, radiators, heater cores, starter relays, temp. sensor, changing coolant , plugs, rotor and cap, plug wires, cam position sensors, cam seals and on. Soon you will go on to axel shafts, wheel bearings etc.

Really, it is fun and you will mess up a few times but save a lot.
