Drivers door lock non functional

Drivers door lock non functional
96 850t lock works great with a fob not when the key is inserted. Feels like no resistance when I manually turn the key. Passenger side works. What is the internal problem most likely to be the culprit here?

Most likely the rod to the latch mechanism has become detached.

It appears that the latch mechanism itself is broken, the rod sits in it's housing but doesn't look right as I work the key in the handle. Not entirely clear how to remove the latch and housing itself after removing the door panel, which I haven't done yet. Tips?
