1999 ---> 2.5T Oil Filter Tool Recommendation

Post by cn90 »

A little update,

I have both the Assenmacher V410 and Lisle 61660 86mm 16-Flute Tools: $16 vs $8 comparison...
You can read amazon reviews, and this is my review, which is similar to amazon reviews...

- The Assenmacher V410 is well constructed (Aluminum) and fits the oil filter cap tightly. It is a bit difficult to separate it from the cap once installed, but wiggle a bit, it will come out. BEST is the leave the cap attached to the tool during removal, then install it, followed by wiggling to separate them.

- The Lise 61660 tool is also well constructed (Steel), the welds are very strong. It is a tiny tiny bit more "loose" than the Assenmacher. The trick is to add a bit of paper towel or a bit of rubber glove to make it fit tight, but this is a bonus, you don't have to do it unless the oil filter cap is on VERY TIGHT from the previous oil change gorilla.

Whatever you choose, both are very very good tools...
- The Assenmacher requires a 21-mm socket/wrench...
- The Lisle tool requires the standard 3/8-inch drive...

Thanks for the post and pictures.

I use my old fashioned strap wrench.
Even with the oil filter housing almost completely surrounded by the oil pans contours I can get 15º nudges using it.
Three or four such nudges and the housing unscrews freely.
COST: $0

Let’s see

The T5 and the P2 take an end cap tool I got from FCP which I like
Both the T4 VW and the BMW use a 36mm socket on the filter housing, ok since I need that for axle shaft bolts anyway..my 36 is also a perfect drift for trailer wheel bearings
Different cap socket for the 1.8T VW
And Evita the S70 needs And end cap for the disposable oil filter on the base model.

My air cooled VWs use a 21mm and 10 mm wrenches

I have the cheap ($7) filter wrench from FCP (gasp!): https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... tools-2489
Just take it out of the tool box and use it. It works.

Or like the guys who own strap wrenches: I now already own this tool, so the COST is $0.

Update,

Just ordered another Lisle 61660 86mm16-Flute Tool from FCPEuro for $7.60/ea.

- It is now painted grey, not black.
- Still made in Taiwan.
- Quality very high.
- Six (6) tack welds on the inside.
- On the outer side: 2 extra welds on opposite sides.

So, if you do minor repair at home and don't have the 21-mm socket for the Assenmacher tool, then the Lisle
tool is excellent bc it uses standard 3/8-inch ratchet.

Avoid the tools (? forgot the brand) that don't have the extra welds on the outside.
They usually break at the tack weld spots.

The newer Lisle tool seems to be a bit tighter, so you may not need to add a bit of rubber on the inside.

Trick: during filter removal, no need to separate the oil filter cap from the device, just leave it there
bc it may be tight. Then during re-installation, once it is snugged and GENTLY tightened, just twist the device
a bit CCW, it will come out.

I do not own the CTA A261 tool, but the reviews on amazon are mixed...
The CTA tool does not have the extra welds around the round disc, only 4 tack welds.
So, if your filter is not over-tightened, you may get away with it.
Otherwise it may break.

Or if you have a welding machine, you can add some extra weld on the inside, around the edge of the round disc...

Here is a pic from amazon reviews to show the broken welds on the CTA...

I have the Lisle 61660, much less frustration than trying to get a wrench in that limited space. Only a couple oil changes on mine but holding up well so far. If not overtightened I think the welded design should be ok.

This is an oil filter wrench. If you do your own filter work you will never come close to using enough force to break those four tack welds, especially if you don't whack on it with a hammer or anything. So don't sweat it if you have the CTA tool (I do! Hasn't broken yet ...).

But I do agree with this point: buy the Lisle over the CTA if you don't yet have a tool for this purpose.

When I bought my 02 I couldn't remove either the oil filter or the drain plug they were so tight. Took it to the place I bought it and they busted the oil filter housing trying to remove it.

Further evidence to solidify why I change my own oil.
