1999 ---> 2.5T Oil Filter Tool recommendation

Post by cn90 »

Hi guys,

For 1999+ models (S70, XC70, XC90 etc.) that use Plastic Oil Filter Cap, what is the best tool that you guys like?

I came across a few options:

CTA A261 ---> $3:

FCP Euro CTA-2489 ---> $10:

Assenmacher Specialty Tools V 410 ---> $16:
https://www.amazon.com/Assenmacher-Speci ... B000XML6DU

And of course, the Volvo OEM Tool for $36:

I have the el-cheap-o one. On our XC90 have to put a shop towel in it to get it to bite. On my s70 no issue.

I saw no reason to spend any more money than the $3 one when I only use it a couple times a year.

Volvo dealer sells AST V410 wrench as "volvo tool 9995679", IMO this is the one to get if you want to properly torque the filter and not replace filter holder too often.

I have the Assenmacher version. It has worked flawlessly but then again the $3.00 versions may work just as well.

The Plastic Oil Filter Cap ($22 at dealer): do you guys ever replace this plastic cap?

In my 1998 BMW 528i, it cracked at 10y/100K or so. Luckily, it was a tiny crack that allows to seep out slowly. I replaced it.

Back to the Volvo, I wonder if this is cheap insurance to replace this thing every 9-10y/90K-100K?

I bought one when I installed the replacement engine in the XC. I managed to chew the original up pretty good when I removed it with some vice grip type oil filter pliers and the cannister on the replacement engine came out of a wrecked car and it had a giant dent in it from the wreck.

A little update,

I have both the Assenmacher V410 and Lisle 61660 86mm 16-Flute Tools: $16 vs $8 comparison...
You can read amazon reviews, and this is my review, which is similar to amazon reviews...

- The Assenmacher V410 is well constructed (Aluminum) and fits the oil filter cap tightly. It is a bit difficult to separate it from the cap once installed, but wiggle a bit, it will come out. BEST is the leave the cap attached to the tool during removal, then install it, followed by wiggling to separate them.

- The Lise 61660 tool is also well constructed (Steel), the welds are very strong. It is a tiny tiny bit more "loose" than the Assenmacher. The trick is to add a bit of paper towel or a bit of rubber glove to make it fit tight, but this is a bonus, you don't have to do it unless the oil filter cap is on VERY TIGHT from the previous oil change gorilla.

Whatever you choose, both are very very good tools...
- The Assenmacher requires a 21-mm socket/wrench...
- The Lisle tool requires the standard 3/8-inch drive...

The Lisle 61660 86mm/16-flute fits conveniently both our volvo XC60T5 and BMW 335i - no need for towels :D
(bought a while ago on sale don't remember exactly for something $12 delivered)
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that
